Journalist Dan Baum wrote in the April cover story of Harper’s about how he interviewed Ehrlichman in 1994 while working on a book about drug prohibition. Ehrlichman provided some shockingly honest insight into the motives behind the drug war. From Harper’s:

“You want to know what this was really all about?” he asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

It all started with what would have been a very simple phone call to make. Going back to the 1960 general election campaign, a political civic rights activist known as martin luther king was arrested and jailed and a favor was being asked to let him go and Nixon never made the call. The Dems jumped on the chance and most likely changed the outcome of the election.

Nixon actually thought marijuana made people hate him. He may have been right.

Yes and the CIA got everyone in the hood hooked on crack and George Bush is responsible for distributing crack pipes to the the poor black man. I'm a crack head and it's everyone's fault but mine, spoken like a true Democrat. Still a slave and don't even know it. In fact vote to continue that slavery every 4 years. Keep voting Democrat and blaming everything bad that happens on someone else. Whatever you do, don't take ANY personal responsibility for your life. Black folk are victims of the biggest most successful con ever. Keep blaming someone else, that's guaranteed to make things better. Meanwhile rich and powerful Democrats like Hillary are laughing their asses off all the way to the bank, Al Sharpton too.

Reagan was an extension of it, but it started with Nixon.

What you said is true to a degree it still doesn't mean that didn't happen. what you are saying is go ahead and blame everyone else but yourself and I think that's right to a degree, but you can't discount the role that government played.
