the fact we are discussing vandi somewhat seriously makes my point. it was hyperbole. kinda. the big 10 is horrendous. but im aware how knee-jerk everyone is and OSU will get in because of it.
For me, it comes down to ratings. Gumps are in because they're #1 and regardless what anyone says, an SEC team pulls ratings. FSU is in because they still haven't lost, but will get ratings because people are itching to see them lose, myself included. Ducks will get the west coast viewers, butt-nuts will get the northeast. Neither TCU nor Baylor are very attractive ratings-wise, no matter how deserving they may be. Like others have said, gumps vs. criminal u in the sugar; ducks and butt-nuts preserve their precious rose bowl. Plus, it keeps fans from having to travel too much (minus OSU, but the big 10 traditionally goes out west, anyway). It's ironic that everyone wanted a playoff because they hated the BCS. But at least with the BCS the gripe was usually over only one of the two teams. Now with this convoluted 4 team format voted on by a small committee, the opportunity exists for them to get 2-3 teams wrong. In the end, though, it generates controversy, and controversy keeps the talking heads and blow hards going.
the wildcard helped baseball. at least interest in the postseason. its magnificent. not so much in the nfl. but it doesnt hurt it either. these non-student athletes are football players first. dont kid yourself.
i dont believe the committee sits there thinking who has the biggest nielsen ratings. or what causes the most controversy. i think they choose who they think is best. and after looking at the top 4 thread posted here, its right in line with everyone else. people are easily swayed by the last thing they see. OSU is in and thats most everyones opinion of who is deserving. FSU deserves to be in bc they are reigning champs and havent lost. Bama and Oregon look the best and are in. Baylor deserves to be in due to h2h. my eyes tell me TCU may be the best team of them all and have been telling me that for 2 months but h2h has to matter most. the big 12s lack of identity is going to cost the both of them. there is no room for error and their league fucked this up. conference slogan is one true champion. yet they have co-champions. jesus you cant make that shit up.
I don't think they actively pursue the controversy part, that exists on its own. But I absolutely do not discount the ratings piece, especially when it comes to seeding. I'm not saying it's an end all be all, but if they've got three teams relatively equal, they give the nod to who will pull the most and keep sponsors happy. A TCU or Baylor will not draw as much interest as an Ohio State. I'm not saying OSU isn't deserving, hell they're down to the 3rd string QB but you wouldn't know it by watching them. And I agree, the big 12 is stupid. Briles is rightfully pissed and would be well within reason to punch their commissioner in the forehead.
im saying they arent. no one else is except i assume the big 12. does your top 4 include OSU? if so, are you adding them for the controversy and ratings or because they are deserving. if the former, then you cant be critical of the committee. because thats who they are going to select.
The wildcard is fine for baseball, a game with over 80 games in a season but still, how did you like 2 wildcard teams playing for the WS? Point is, this cannot be compared to a 12 game football season with twice the amount of teams. We get to extending the playoffs for the NCAA and we are gonna end up with a Boise national champ because they got hot the last couple of games. I get I get I get the athlete/ student thing but good lord man, education has got to mean something in this game or we will end up fielding a bunch of criminals to carry the flag for our universities. It's bad enough already that they are running our government.
If the committee's job was to select the best 4 teams then FSU has no place in the playoff. The struggles they have had with mediocre teams shows them to be no up to the others in the top 6. Tell me if you think they would beat any of the other 5 teams. I don't see them in 2 touchdowns of them. Yes they were undefeated but when has that meant anything to Marshall, Boise State and the like? The ACC is by far the weakest of the power 5 conferences. tOSU has played themselves in I think. They have been impressive in the last 2 weeks beating very good teams in Mich St & Wisconsin. They have been as impressive as the Gumps and Ducks. To me the decision is between TCU &. Baylor. I do wonder if either has a D to hang ing with the top 3. Here the head to head should rule and Baylor should be the 4th team in. However the rocket scientist heading the Big 12 (so called) has put them in a position where they deserve to be left out. Best 4 swap Baylor & TCU but head to head demands Baylor be the fourth.
