And I like the idea of seeding, but I would try hard (if up to me) to avoid rematches or teams from the same conference from playing each other in the 1st round. But I will say this --- an 8 team playoff would definately hurt the regular season. I love it when every game counts.
Yeah how so? I mean games like LSU vs The Independent Welders College of Booger Hollow Arkansas would be meaningless but those games already are. And the BCS put a team in the championship game against a team that already beat them on their own home field..... That's what trashes the regular season in my opinion. Which could happen in future 8 team playoffs or even 4 team, but at least it's a playoff.
The CFP format of 4 games is in place for 12 years. I suspect there may be a process in place to change it, but I don't know what that process is.
Having 8 teams does have some effect on the regular season being as meaningful. We will see teams from the SEC lose in the SEC championship or teams who didn't even make the championship game get a chance in the playoff (BCS failed at least once in that aspect as well). I suspect we would possible see 2 or 3 loss teams make it in, etc… However, I think it is a small price to pay to see a great product for the fans. I don't think it would lead to teams resting players at the end of the season like in the NFL because seeding would also be different compared to the NFL.
Once there is a championship playoff, there will be pressure to expand. The NCAA Basketball Tournament was once 16 teams, now it is 64.
You're right Red and if it expands past 8 it will water down he regular season as well as the playoffs. It will be like BBall where getting into the tourney is more like a participation trophy for teams in the bottom 2/3 of the field. It may do a lot for the coffers leagues but it will make FBall the poorer for it.
