This 4 team selection was pretty difficult. All 6 teams had a case. I guess it's good that 4 conference champions were selected. We would have had even more drama had Miss St beaten Ole Miss. But the facts are -- the Big 12 hurt themselves by having co-champs, and by NOT having a conference championship game. So the 4 teams we've got, have the 4 best records: 12-1 12-1 13-0 12-1
Yet, you would be changing the regular season drastically if you chose to adopt those models; IE: DIII playoffs. Their first round was the 22nd of last month. That's three weeks out of the regular playing season. Are you suggesting scraping all out of conference games during the regular season as well? We'd be left with one as it stands today with a chance of a nine game conference schedule on the horizon.
I wasn't suggesting that they adopt the DIII model. I just used that as an example. I am for 8 and no m0re. That adds only one extra game for the 2 teams that make the finals and realistically nobody deserving would be left out. Baylor and TCU are as much or more deserving to be in this years playoff than Ohio State. This year the 7th and 8th teams would be Mississippi State and Michigan State. I hope that the SEC doesn't go to a 9 game conference schedule. With the brutal conference matchups they already play adding a 9th game would take away the possibility of scheduling an extra quality OOC opponent. For LSU that's usually one good OOC team and 3 cupcakes or once in a while as in 2011 2 good OOC teams and 2 cupcakes. Teams like Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and South Carolina who already have a yearly traditional OOC rivalry game would almost never schedule an extra quality opponent.
I'm all for 8. It is just the right number. The powers that be will no doubt come back with 5 having #1 getting a buy.
Agree. At four, a major conference champion has to get shut out of the process every time. Eight is probably more than we really need; 6 would really be right, but I don't like byes in a tournament that actually means something. Eight gets everyone who deserves to be there, plus allows a couple of potential Cinderellas without the field getting watered down.
I like seating the five conference champions plus three wild cards. It would have been good to the SEC West.
