REYNOLDS, Ga. - University of Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall has been issued a citation for possession of marijuana, the Reynolds, Georgia police chief confirmed to WRBL News 3. Around 12:45p et, an officer stopped Marshall along Georgia Highway 96 because his Dodge Charger had windows that were too dark, Chief Lonnie Holder said. As the officer questioned Marshall, the officer smelled marijuana and located less than an ounce of the drug tucked away in the car's visor, according to Holder. The drug was tested and results confirmed it was marijuana. Marshall was not arrested and will not have to appear in court on September 10 if he pays the citation fines. He was ticketed $100 for the windows and another $1,000 for the drugs. Marshall was alone in the car, Holder said.

Defensive lineman Jarran Reed was arrested Sunday morning and charged with DUI, according to records at the Tuscaloosa County Jail. He was being held on $1,000 unsecured bond. According to Tuscaloosa police, Reed had a blood alcohol content of 0.13 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08. Reed was driving a white 2011 Dodge Charger, according to a TPD news release, when an officer saw him collide with another vehicle at 1:50 a.m. while backing out of a parking spot. Reed attempted to exit the parking lot, but the officer stopped him, the TPD release stated. The incident occurred in the 2400 block of University Boulevard, or the City Fest lot in Tuscaloosa. A field sobriety test was conducted when there was smell of alcohol in the car. "We are disappointed in Jarran's actions and this is obviously not the kind of behavior we expect from our players," Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement via UA media relations. "It is a privilege to represent the University of Alabama and there are responsibilities that go along with that privilege. We'll evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate discipline so better choices and decisions can be made in the future." A week earlier, Tide running back Kenyan Drake was arrested for obstructing governmental operations. Reed is the second Alabama player arrested for DUI in 2014 after linebacker Dillon Lee was charged in April. Reed, a Goldsboro, N.C. product, transferred to Alabama from East Mississippi Community College this spring. He worked significant time with the first team throughout spring practices. The 6-foot-4, 310 pound defensive end started in the A-Day Game and made one tackle. Reed made five stops in the second scrimmage of the spring, including one tackle in the backfield. As one of the top JUCO recruits in the nation and a former Florida signee, Reed had big expectations when he arrived in Tuscaloosa. "Just come in, help the team as much as I can," Reed said on National Signing Day in February. "I'm just going to play hard, just do what I can, get in and learn the plays, just be coachable and be helpful to the team." Reed came to Alabama along with former East Mississippi CC teammate D.J. Pettway. Both had strong reviews in spring practice as the Tide built a deep defensive line. "We're all brothers and everything, so they're all fitting in good," defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson said. "It's just like we're all just one group. We all see each other as equals and we're all brothers." Pettway was happy to have him in Tuscaloosa. "I talked to him every day about it," Pettway said on National Signing Day. "At first he signed with Florida and we talked about it all the time. With me being here, it was easy for me to tell him how things are going to be. I was just letting him know it was hard work and afterwards you'd be a very complete player."
Unless you come across some Barney Fife wannbe (and there are still plenty of them out there), you'll hardly ever get arrested now for a small amount of pot. Most jurisdictions now give their officers discretion to write a summons to appear, which is what amounts to an expensive speeding ticket that you can either pay the fine on or fight in court.
