He had to be pragmatic about it. There was a problem with calling them POW's in an ongoing war because we would have to allow them Geneva Conference treatment, according to our own laws. There was a problem with trying them as criminals in our courts, according to our own laws, because the Republicans were fighting it. He didn't push the issue because he didn't want it to get in the way of passing Obamacare when the Dems had Congress. After the gerrymandering in 2010, he had a hostile Republican House to deal with. At some point, decisions will have to be made on the 115 Gitmo prisoners. 43 have already been authorized for release, having served long sentences already. We are likely hoarding them for bargaining chips when the next American gets captured by jihadists. Gitmo has issues both as a military base and a prison. Holding the prisoners without status for 12 years is risking our legal standing in international affairs. I really don't see the problem. 43 will be deported when it is advantageous for us to do so. The others will likely be separated into two groups. Some of them captured on the battlefield will be given POW status and Geneva treatment until the war is over, which is anybody's guess when. The remaining hardcores will get tried in the US, convicted, and given life sentences in a Supermax prison. All according to our laws and exactly what we do with our own prisoners. Who could complain? Nobody has ever escaped from a Supermax prison and it is far worse than the military camp that Gitmo is. They get no Geneva rights there, but now that the torture is over, they are basically being treated like POWS. They are allowed to socialize and live in dormitory barracks and play soccer. And plot together. In a Supermax, they will be in their cells, in solitary 23 hours a day with one one hour alone in the rec room and with no contact at all between guards or other prisoners. No windows, no movable furniture. No nuthin'. The best way to deal with the Gitmo prisoners is to try them according to our laws and be done with them.
the bill is about Sequestration and spending levels, republicans try to undo their own agreement with cutting the military spending like they put into the sequestration. thats about it.
