His expectations are realistic instead of imaginative.

It takes more than just talent to win a title.

Was tOSU the most talented team in CFB last year? Debatable, certainly, but there's an argument that can be made.

What they did have was extraordinary depth at QB for the system that they run. And no way can anyone convince me that Urban felt he had a shot at it all let alone winning the damn thing after Braxton went down. All of the 'experts' wrote them off instantly when that happened as well..

Ohio State just had that magic formula that comes about from a confluence of events predicated mostly on talent, coaching, and heady play but the indeterminable element that had most on their side was good fortune.

Plain old luck helped them win it all.

It happens with every champion, though, if you look closely enough. Saban and the Tide lost at home to LSU, but they somehow managed a rematch with us for the title. Lucky breaks cause certain teams kept losing that kept the Tide in it.

Same thing can be said for a 2 loss LSU team in 2007, of course.

So everything has to align pretty perfectly for whichever team wins it all. The talent level isn't so disparate at that championship game level that talent/coaching alone will decide the day.

Remember the Nebraska "kick catch" that got them in? You are right, happens with every champion in CFB. Auburn used theirs up during the regular season two years ago.

In modern football, it all comes down to the QB play, which Miles & Co. have failed on the majority of his years at LSU.

Guess what, an NFL Scout said the league won't be drafting a SEC QB in the first round anytime soon. The SEC hasn't produced an All-Pro QB with the last name other than Manning in three decades.

To add, the QB with the three best performances in yards passing came from a school called Northern Iowa. 414, 377 and 365 yards in each Super Bowl.

Joe Namath was elected into the HOF with the numbers 173 TD's, 220 Int's and a 50.1 completion %.

Oh, the QB that set all the SB records, Kurt Warner, not yet in the HOF. LSU has a guy that has not made it into the LSU HoF, Pistol. Kurt and Pete both share Birthdays June 22nd. FYI

Yep, looks like LSU and Les aren't the only ones with QB problems, not finding the great QB's.

Pro Sports Daily made a list of the QB's with the best arms, LSU was the only school with two players. Bert and JaMarcus.

I often wondered if Russell would have gone anywhere else, how he would have done?

Terribly, I think. Jimbo worked wonders with him and Les was the right coach for his temperament. I can only imagine Nick going ballistic on him over a mistake and JR tuning him out. Nick's learned since then. Especially after the Miami debacle. He preferred the big athletic specimens at QB over the steady game manager types. He started guys like Tony Banks, JaMarcus, Marcus Randall, and he finally learned when he foolishly chose Daunte Culpepper over Brees.. Since then he's had Greg McElroy and then AJ McCarron. Blake Sims turned out to be a guy that was a bit of both, but an effective leader who didn't beat his own team with mistakes. Saban learned.

JaMarcus you could tell was a stock market player. Once he cashed in he tuned out. I'm still puzzled how Oakland talked themselves into taking him first overall.

Oakland has done so much better in the draft as of late.
In last years draft they hit on their 1,2,3, two 4th rounders, and two 7th rounders. They only missed on one drafted player, a 7th rounder.

Talk about a bad draft, look at the Saints last year.

Baptiste was just jaw-droppingly bad. I didn't understand it then nor do I now. The Saints have proven adept at finding RBs undrafted and late round offensive linemen, but they can't draft linebackers or corners for the life of them. Tracy Porter is the only success story and injuries derailed his promising career.

You're right though. Oakland, sad to say, has improved after the passing of the icon. Al did it his way, that's for sure.
