I hate the comparisons to baseball, but it seems a little odd to allow a pinch hitter to come in and the batter he's replacing has to sit. You want ridiculous? Try out the DH being available for one side of the MLB.

    been like that since 1878
On January 11, 1973, the American League owners voted 8–4 to approve the designated hitter for a three-year trial run.

The National League held a yes/no vote on August 13, 1980, to determine whether or not the league would adopt the designated hitter. A simple majority of the 12 member teams was necessary to pass the rule, and the measure was expected to pass. The final tally was four teams voting for the DH (Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Diego Padres), five votes against (Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, and San Francisco Giants), and three abstentions (Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Houston Astros). Five days after that meeting, the Cardinals fired their general manager, John Clairborne, who was the leading proponent for the adoption of the DH rule, and the National League has not held another vote on the issue.

I wouldn't want to be the one to explain to shane the DP used in softball. Right off the bat, he will think that "DP" was a typo. :D

Do they have different double plays in softbsoftball too? Why don't they just let both teams put their whole rosters on the field at the same time? A second first baseman would be just the ticket for backing up those overthrows to first. And the backup catcher would really be the backup catcher.

Not following your angle here but the "designated hitter" in softball (DP) is actually better than in baseball imo. Reason being, if a league is looking for ways around weaknesses, softball has it down. Even allows the "designated hitter" an option - if chosen- to play defense.

It's quite complicated and called a flex player. If you want to blow your mind, here's a rundown.

Really don't think you baseball guys can handle this so let me drip it. Here are just TWO parts:

    4) Example: Should the DP decide to play defense one inning for the left fielder, then the left fielder sits on the bench, but continues to bat in his/her normal listed spot on the line up card, along with the DP batting in his/her normal listed spot on the line up card. Whenever the DP is playing defense, the player being played for is considered to still be in the game, but “temporarily” on the bench and still has to bat in his/her normal spot.

    5) The player listed in the 10th position on the line up card is called the “Flex” Player, and plays DEFENSE ONLY. The DP and the Flex can be playing defense at the same time; it is just that the Flex does not bat. The DP could be playing defense for any of the other top 9 players listed on the line up card as mentioned above.
