Oregon vs Wisconsin,.. 2 seconds left, the ref sets the ball and the whisky QB quickly spikes the ball to stop the clock. The refs said the game clock ran out before he got the play off, it was close. I think the rule change clarifies that situation,.. with less than 3 seconds remaining, you won't be able to spike the ball and still have time left on the clock.
You mean to tell me It takes longer than 3 seconds to snap a football and spike it? Im 43, gaining wt everyday and I guarantee you I can get that accomplished and still have a tick left to run another play.
I can appreciate everyone's worries about changing football into a wussy sport w/the new rule change. But, if you are honest about it, from the 80s to now, there is a lot more head hunting going on. It's gotten ruthless and crazy. In the really old days, ala Dick Butkus/Art Donovan, etc, those guys took cheap shots, hit QBs after the ball was released, etc, but they weren't leaving their feet in a spear like fashion and taking out a dude's head or neck. They knocked out a lot more teeth than you see now (just like in hockey), and changes in those rules over the years have helped in these areas w/o truly hurting the game. As it stands, dude's 40+ years old have ruined their knees, hips, and backs after their NFL careers, and obviously cumulative concussive effects are being more and more recognized. An increase in protection is warranted, imo. I just hope, as CLM eludes to, for judicious application. From some of the ref's and commissioner comments above, it is clear that they feel "we have to change behavior".
It was this play,.. with 2 seconds left on the clock it was a close call. I think the officials are trying to set the rule and 3 seconds was their choice. Two seconds works for me
The NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Panel said there were 99 targeting penalties in major college games last year that would have resulted in an ejection under the new rules for 2013
