2 QB system? It's my belief that two 1/2 QB's don't make a whole QB. But I'm not paid to make that call.
If you watched Maryland play at all this year, there's no doubt who was calling our plays when the crow was here. Problem is, Les found his old playbook sometime after the SECCG. That, or maybe he consulted with Gary prior to Monday night.
I think it is clear that we run the offense Les wants to run. Now would it be be different if we had better QB's? Are we running this offense to mask QB's that are not exactly superlative? Next year will tell, because the very last elements of the abysmal offense of the past is gone. If we are still middle of the pack at the end of next year (with a much easier schedule), then we will know for sure who calls the shot behind the offense.
Considering Crowton has sucked everywhere else after a year or two, I'd say it's Crowton. Especially considering the bang-up job he did at Maryland...where he no longer coaches after one season. But I do agree about the proven OC who will stop with the gimmicks. Pro-style defense with an amateur offense...at least in regard to passing the ball. My optimism rests in the fact that this offense looked much different with a pocket passer. Lee was no world beater, but we weren't as gimmicky as we became with JJ back in charge.
i've been impressed with the quality of potential OC Saban has been lining up to replace McIlwain. I've heard Marty Schotenheimber (sic, sorry) son and some other NFL offensive coordinator to name a couple. CLM needs to hire someone really good and trust him. We have too many weapons for our receivers to have such ordinary numbers.
At one point this season or last, Les even said something about the limitations of the two QB's, and it sounded a lot like he knew he didn't have a full QB, but two "half" QB's.
It's a sad realization, but, Coach Les Miles can't coach offense and he can't coach defense. He needs a tactical field general as OC and DC in order to hope to out - scheme an opponent. He's simply a guy who gets paid a lot of money to be the face of the program, recruit and to make executive decisions. He has never been a coordinator for an Offense, and he has no experience playing/coaching defense. As such, LSU's powers that be need to start tellling Coach Miles that he's going to hire an OC and let that man run the Offense.
I love how fans think that someone who is a football coach only knows the side of the ball or the position that he played. My dad was an OLman for high school and college, but he could coach the heck out of defense--or any other position. Coaches KNOW the GAME of football. Les Miles is NOT a dimwit, who's just good for recruiting. There are so many kneejerk misconceptions that are simply ridiculous.
