Since the XFL was a joke I won't consider it when I stew on this one. If they go after free agents and late rounders they could possibly give the NFL some competition. It's all about money. If they can offer those players more than NFL teams they could get some good ones. My only question would be where do you put new teams? You will be fine on TV, but how are you going to get people in the seats? Most NFL states are pretty saturated with teams. What states would they go after? http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ap-newfootballleague&prov=ap&type=lgns
Agreed. Every league that's tried to compete with the NFL has failed. Remember the USFL? They signed some pretty big names (Herschel Walker, Steve Young, etc) and couldn't last. The Amercian football is unique in that it's not really an international sport like baseball and basketball. As a result, the NFL has got a very strong name brand; the result of which is crushing to anyone who tried to compete with them. The Arena League doesn't count because they're not in direct competition with the NFL.
i dunno why everyone hates on the XFL, i loved it. remember the crazy way the determined possession at the start of the game? two fellas sprint and dive on the ball? awesome.
Somehow I don't think a two team league will cut it. Lets say they start with 10 teams. Where will they go? Las Vegas? Another team in California? New York? Shreveport? Idaho?
There are a lot of places that could support a minor league football team, but I don't think there are more than a handful that could generate enough revenue to support an NFL level franchise.
