I'm not sure this is going to eliminate kickoff run backs at all. In fact it could do just the opposite. With touchbacks coming out to the 25 instead of the 20, I think it would be in the best interest of the kicking team to not kick the ball into the endzone. The kickoff team will be 5 yards closer to the opposing returner, so if you can get the place kicker to kick the ball higher and keep it short of the endzone, the tacklers would be on top of the returner before he could get a start, thus limiting the possibility of the returner getting out of the shadow of his own endzone much less out to the 25. If they brought the ball out to the 20 instead of the 25, then, I think kicking into the endzone might be the better option. What do you all think?
It all depends on the ability of your kicker. NFL kickers and gunners wouldn't have much trouble doing what you described, but that's asking a bit much for most college teams. You're more likely to see kicks with plenty of air time, but not much distance, which can blow a hole in your coverage scheme at worst, and let the offense start with much better field position than the 25 at best. Most coaches are still going to tell their kids to drill it as far as they can.
I think we will see a little of everything, and much of it will depend on how good the returner is for the receiving team. It actually might make things very interesting. We might also see more fair catches due to kicks coming down around the 20-25 when the k.o. team has a lot of speed like LSU.
