I know it seems like it happened a lot, but the play-by-play tells a much different story. 80% of the time LSU was faced with a 3rd and 5 yards or more, the play called was a pass play. Out of the three running plays, one was successful in converting to a first down, but the fumble at the end negated the gain.

1st Quarter:
3rd and 8 at LSU 49 Jordan Jefferson pass incomplete.

3rd Quarter:
3rd and 6 at UNC 50 Jordan Jefferson pass complete to Terrence Toliver for 4 yards to the NCaro 46.

3rd and 7 at LSU 43 Stevan Ridley rush for a loss of 2 yards to the LSU 41.

4th Quarter
3rd and 5 at LSU 36 Jordan Jefferson pass complete to Terrence Toliver for 7 yards to the LSU 43 for a 1ST down

3rd and 5 at UNC 19 Stevan Ridley rush for 3 yards to the NCaro 26, LSU penalty 10 yard holding accepted.

3rd and 12 at UNC 26 Jordan Jefferson sacked by Kareem Martin for a loss of 22 yards to the NCaro 48, LSU penalty 0 yard intentional grounding on Jordan Jefferson accepted. (pass attempt)

3rd and 10 at LSU 27 Jordan Jefferson pass complete to Rueben Randle for 3 yards to the LSU 30

3rd and 5 at UNC 34 Stevan Ridley rush for 7 yards, fumbled, recovered by NCaro Quan Sturdivant at the NCaro 27.

Playing your game, I would still be sober and that would be unfortunate.

Yeah that game would have sucked. It would have forced me to cheat to get all my drinks in.

The play-by-play also doesn't show that the Ridley run on 3rd down for "3 yards" went for a TD, that was called back by a penalty.

Chavis has some stats for you.:wave::hihi:

Chavis' defense succeeded on third downs 63.2 percent of the time last season.

"Our goal is 70 percent," he said. "If we finish at 70 percent on third down, then we're going to finish probably at the top of the league. There's no question about that. So, yeah, the opportunity is there to improve."

Chavis' sheet of statistics broke it down deeper. LSU was strong on third-and-long (6 or more yards), which is the easiest of third-down situations.

"We finished at 75 percent, and that's pretty good," he said. "Eighty percent will put you in the top of the country. So we can improve a little bit there."

LSU struggled against third-and-short situations (1 to 3 yards), which are the most difficult to defend since offensive teams have great chances of making it by runs or passes.

"We need to improve that and our third-and-medium (3 to 6 yards)," Chavis said, but he did not share the numbers. "We were really not very good in that area. That's an area that we're going to focus on. In third and three to six yards, there are a lot of things that can happen. You've got to handle a lot of situations. And that is going to be an area that we will definitely improve. So yeah, third down's a big down. We chart it. But to answer your question, absolutely, we've got to get off the field whether it's three downs or out or whatever."

So in conclusion we would be smashed on 3rd and short but not even close to a buzz on 3rd and anything else. :grin:
