Why is that? I mean if I just wanted to pull a name out of the sky how about Bill Belechick. We may have about as much chance with coach O, but of the realistic potential DCs out there he'd probably top my list. He's got a great track record as a defensive coach and a GREAT recruiter, Louisiana ties, probably could even recruit the west coast, his strength is the D line, and is fiery as hell. At Saints camp this year he ran the field with the players and actually looked like he was running the entire defense. I think he'd make a GREAT DC for LSU, but he'll probably be promoted to DC for the Saints. Any cons you had in mind?
The guy couldn't get anything done at Ole Miss (10-25) and was constantly the butt of jokes. I think bringing him back to the SEC right now would look odd. Besides, I remember reading a while back that he flunked out of LSU and always had some kind of ax to grind with the school. I also remember him suspending players and/or dismissing some others in both '06 and in '07. During Katrina, I believe he tried to coax players to leave Tulane for Ole Miss, which, to me, is kinda shady. I wouldn't want him here.
He was a failure as a head coach, but is a pretty good D line coach. Not sure if he is DC material or not. One concern is that he really was big time anti LSU while at ole siss, more than the usual coach talk. It sure looked as if he had an ax to grind. He sure was a great recruiter, but has he ever been a DC at any level? Besides like I posted earlier I don't see him leaving his current gig. Not too many fired college coaches are immediately hired to be an NFL coach.
#6 in Total defense and #1 in Scoring Defense in his first year as DC at Miami, when he also wonm the Broyles Award for best College Football Assistant. he had a rough season the next year in 2002, but they bounced back nicely in 2003 when the U ranked #4 in Scoring Defense and #2 in Total Defense (right behind LSU). In 2004, Miami ranked #13 in Scoring Defense and #28 in Total Defense, but in 2005 Miami jumped back up to #4 in Scoring and Total Defense. In 2006 they ranked #13 in Scoring and #7 in Total Defense. Last season Miami really suffered on Defense while he was the head coach. So I guess the answer to your question is "last season", but they have had one of the top defenses in the nation all but one year that he was the Defensive Coordinator. Why do you feel he's a poor choice again?
Yes, and not many of them were high school classmates of Bobby Hebert. I'd venture to guess that Bobby helped him get the job. He may be deserving of it, I don't know.
I wasn't trying to say that made him a good coach, just that it made it even less likely to change jobs since he is lucky to have the one he has.
As a SL alumn Id love to see Coach O get the job. He is a GREAT recruiter as well. As mentioned he is a good coach for the DL, with the talent LSU has the DL has underperformed thus far. Anyone is an upgrade to what we have now.
