yeah that does suck. i'm pretty liberal but i don't believe in handouts for able bodied people (except medical). Our infrastructure is crumbling and these people receiving a check who could work, could be put to work for that check they receive.
I have looked at the numbers on this a great deal. The best way to address this would be to go to a flat tax, or at least go to a tax system that starts off flat and then goes progressive on income above the poverty level.
Think about it a little. We're not talking about the poorest 1%, 3%, or even 10% of people in this country. We're talking about 40% to 50% of all the people. You can't give a free ride to that many people and expect to thrive as a society. It just doesn't work. If someone can show me how it does, I'm all ears.
Be aware that that the top 10 percent that pay the 73% of taxes are the ones that made more than 73% of the income. Conversely the lowest 40 percent earn so little that simply taking the same standard deduction and dependent exemptions that the middle class takes, leaves them with little or no tax owed, so they get back the deductions that the IRS took from their paychecks. It's their own money. The flat tax may be the way to go.
Do you think a family of four making $50,000 should pay any income tax? ***not necessarily directed at red, I just want to know what anyone thinks about that specific question.
All I know is that I'm driving a 1997 F150 that rattles in neutral but I paid enough in taxes last year to support a family of 4 quite nicely.
