Thats not really my beef with it. It is the fact that most of these people havnt even been down there and really have no clue how safe it is or isnt. Also, I don't like how he automatically assumes he will be an All Star.

So one must visit a place BEFORE inquiring about its safety? That doesn't make a bit of sense. And let's not be so pollyanna as to think the significant crime element is entirely limited to 9th Ward and Central City.

The point that people are making about the NBA All Star game is less about the natives, and more about the thugs that turn it into the new Freaknik. And let's face it, NOBODY out-thugs NOLA thugs. NOBODY. That point has been made clearly in Houston, so it's only reasonable to wonder whether the game will attract a Battle of the Thugs.

The irony is you probably hate the NBA because of its thug image, which is sorely oversold. The games are the most entertaining they've been since the late 80's.
Bingo. Not to mention the fact that McGrady IS an All-Star when healthy anyway. And that back doctor/magician seems to have worked wonders.

Certainly not. But people can't just make blanket statements about a city when they don't know the whole story, but think they do because they watch the national news.

And it's not so pollyanna to think the significant crime element is there. You don't see nearly as much crime (if any significance, that is) in the French Quarter, Downtown, and Uptown. And those are the places that tourists are going to visit.

Now this point I will agree with. The NBA will likely bring it's thug element. But that's going to happen in any city the game goes to. And in that case, as the NBA, I would be more worried about trying to eliminate that element and mentality, as opposed to blaming the crime that the game will bring with it on a city that hasn't even hosted the event yet. I know things are moving slowly, but who's to say things won't be different by next year? And if things aren't different, then the city has a lot more to worry about than just controlling crime during All-Star weekend.
