You should ask LaRon Landry What he thinks about this guy Jerry Gray This is his current coach, underemployed at his current position....and a pretty decent dude; OK, he is from Lubbock and that is how I know him...but that doesn't change the fact that he would be a GREAT addition to your staff. http://www.redskins.com/gen/coaches/Jerry_Gray.jsp Jerry Gray is in his third season as the Redskins secondary-cornerbacks coach after spending the previous five seasons as defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. Gray has amassed more than 20 years of NFL experience, nine seasons as a player and 11 as an assistant coach. In 2007, the Redskins’ secondary was led by veterans Shawn Springs and Fred Smoot. Together, Springs and Smoot combined for 129 tackles (114 solo), five interceptions and 29 pass deflections. Carlos Rogers’ 2007 season was cut short due to a knee injury and he was placed on injured reserve in Week 8. Leigh Torrence added depth at the position. From 2001-05, Gray served as defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. In 2004, Gray led a defense that finished in the top five in the NFL in touchdowns allowed (29), yards allowed per game (264.2), passing yards allowed per game (164.0) and sacks registered (45). The unit led the league with 39 turnovers forced. In 2003, Gray’s defense finished the year ranked second in the NFL in total defense, second against the pass and eighth against the run. Prior to his time in Buffalo, Gray served four seasons as an assistant with the Tennessee Titans, including the last two as defensive backs coach. He helped Tennessee finish No. 1 in total defense and pass defense in 2000. Gray originally started with the Titans as defensive assistant-quality control coach in 1997. He broke into the coaching ranks in 1995 as a defensive backs coach at Southern Methodist University. Gray played nine seasons as a cornerback in the NFL, earning All-Pro honors four times and reaching the Pro Bowl four times (1986-89) with the Los Angeles Rams. He played with the Rams (1985-91), Houston Oilers (1992) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993) in his nine-year NFL career. Gray was selected by the Rams with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft. Gray posted a season-high eight interceptions in 1986, just his second season in the NFL. He was also named the NFL’s Defensive Back of the Year in 1989 and earned Pro Bowl MVP honors in 1990. Gray is a former teammate of defensive backs coach Steve Jackson. Both were starters with the Houston Oilers in 1992. Gray was a two-time consensus All-American safety and two-time Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year at the University of Texas in 1983-84. Gray became a member of the University of Texas All-Time Team and All-Decade Team for the 1980s. In high school, he lettered in football, basketball and track at Estacado High School in Lubbock, Tex., his hometown. He was inducted into the Texas High School Hall of Fame in 1995 and was recently named to the All-Time Texas High School team. Gray graduated from the University of Texas with a B.S. degree in speech communications. Gray and his wife Sherry have two sons: Jeremy and Jayden.
