As I've said 100 times, the defense simply CANNOT overpursue. They must be disciplined, which is something they've yet to do against a spread offense. That system relies on the defenders' eyes getting big and getting sucked into the misdirection. The best way to contain the attack is for the defense to let the play come to them. That means that the line must play laterally, and not try to go around the offensive linemen. We'll probably also need to put a spy on Tebow. And, as much as no one wants to hear it, I think it would be wise to play a lot of zone coverage. Another thing that the spread option exploits is taking DB's out of the play in man coverage. Of course, if Brantley starts, we'd likely be better off in man-to-man. Offensively, we know what we need to do. No need to go over that again. However, there was one thing in particular that we did yesterday that we'll need to execute to keep them honest: run the screen. On one of our drives in the 2nd half, there was a third down where everyone and their momma knew the blitz was coming. So Jefferson dropped back, let the pocket form, and tossed it to Chuck who then proceeded to get about 15 yards. I fully expect Florida to blitz us repeatedly considering Jefferson's film shows his somewhat lacking pocket presence. If we can establish early on that we intend on making them pay for their over-pursuit, we can keep them on their heels.
yeah that's what i was thinking during the game. with all the sacks on jefferson, florida would have a field day with the blitzes. but you're right. if we can still get the ball off early for a few big plays, that would help.
The play of both our offensive and defensive lines will determine this game. Although that usually determines all games haha. To go on what islstl said, I believe Chad Jones will play a very crucial role. We all know Florida has a ton of homerun hitters and they are going to get big runs no matter what, but it's going to be up to Chad Jones and Brandon Taylor to stop them from having big touchdown runs. Definitely a big responsibility falls on the offense to run the ball well and keep drives going to keep Florida's offense off the field. I like our defense overall but no one in the country can stop Florida's offense for too long. The longer you keep them off the field the better your chance of winning the game.
