LSU really only gave up 3 points in the entire 2nd half. The first half can be chalked up to first game jitters and jetlag.. but make no mistake.. LSU was a different team in the 2nd half. Vandy game will spell out the rest of the season I think.. if we can't stop them.. we're in for a rough ride and another new defensive coordinator.
I don't understand this. That last drive was exactly like the rest of their drives all night. It wasn't like they hit on a lucky play, or even a single big play. They converted multiple 3rd downs on that drive...just like they did all night. Look at the statistics. They had an embarrassingly high percentage of 3rd down conversions! That last drive counts...just like all the rest.
LSU was playing 15-yard cushion and prevent. Up 15 with 1:30 to go, you just don't want to let them score in one play. They gave them 15-20 yards a play.
They had extra help deep and were giving up the short routes to keep the clock rolling. The game was out of reach at this point so we saw the 'prevent' defense. That was the plan on that last drive.. let them march down the field in 5-10 yard increments and run the clock out. They only co They converted just a little bit over 50% of their 3rd downs. That needs to drop down to about 35% and we'll be in good shape. Don't confuse the first half defense and the second half defense.. as far as i'm concerned -- 2 different teams. Just went over the 2nd half.. INCLUDING their drive in garbage time they were only 4/10 on 3rd downs in the 2nd half.
Locker runs a 4.4 - forty (4.39 to be exact from what was reported). Containing him is hard no matter who you are. He's gonna get his yards. Christ! The kid ran for over 900 yards 2 years ago! ...and you don't think Washington is saying that exact same thing about containing Jefferson???
Very true, but we can't let teams get off long scoring drives in under two minutes in SEC play, it will lose us games.
Completely agree. As long as this is a gameplan against an inferior opponent.. i'm okay. I want to see us attack the stronger teams though.. attack, attack, attack. I think Chavis might have got a tad gun shy.. he brought the house and Washington had a screen called that went for a TD (or a long long gain)
I agree, but with a 15 point lead, the 1st score don't hurt you. I rather them give them 10-12 yards and make them take the full minute to score than to gamble and have the opponent score on one play.
<--- Also concerned with punting. <--- Is somewhat concerned with defense. We had these same problems last year and they didn't get corrected. Hope Chavis proves differntly.
