I wonder how Major Applewhite feels about this development? I'm assuming he went back to Texas, in particular, to have a chance at the head job one day.
Hmmmm, I think: 1. Muschamp is overrated. He is good but not great. 2. Muschamp will get a better offer long before Mack Brown decides to retire, he's only 57. Muschamp will not sit around for 8 or 10 years. He'll be a candidate for every BCS school with an opening.
Dodds has been AD at Texas for 28 years. I'd imagine that his term is nearing its end, and that Mack has his eye on that position. It may be sooner than you think.
I don't think this deal does anything other than give Muschamp a nice raise (from $440K to $920K). But as far as "locking in" Muschamp, I don't see it. Muschamp wants a D-I head coaching job, he's certainly deserving of the opportunity, and he has demonstrated that he will jump ship if the move helps him in reaching his objectives. It's naive to think that $920k per year as an assistant will keep CWM from accepting a $2.5M+ offer as a head coach. I'm willing to wager that Muschamp will never see the day that he is the HC at Texas
Hard to say. Brown is only 57. Dodds is nearing 70 but in good health and at the top of his game. No mandatory retirement age either. I think Muschamp is going to have to wait a couple more years at least. JMO. Apparently his wife and kids love Austin, so he may stick around. I agree with Red. I'm not sold on Muschamp having the right temperament to be a good head coach.
I'm surprised that Brown is only 57; I had him pegged for at least 60-63. Apparently, it doesn't really matter to some coaches if their wife and children love where they live.
I doubt he would have agreed to this if Mack plans on coaching that much longer. WM, Mack, and the AD sat down and discussed this for a while - so one would think that ole Mack might be an AD fairly soon.
How does it hurt Muschamp to agree to a huge raise? There is nothing binding on him and nothing to keep a school from offering him a better deal this year or next year. He's going to be a candidate for every big opening. Everybody wants to find the Next Big Thing in coaching. He could coach at Tennessee or Auburn for five years and still be a candidate for Mack Browns job when he retires. Texas is trying to keep Muschamp from leaving by tempting him, but he is no fool. I'll bet you Jimbo is not the happiest heir apparent either.
Muschamp and Jimmy Sexton know this. Which is why I would assume they said we want ___,____, and ____ or we're out of here. I would never do it if I was in that situation, but I am sure he got a sweet deal.
