There are more than 4 players and coaches that you can't leave off. Even leaving off coaches who haven't won more than 1 natty that still leaves Cannon, Maravich, Shaq, Burrow and Bertman.
In 10 years it will be Shaq. Skip. Will Wade and Orgeron. Burrow didn't even go to class. He can be content with a statue. Need more than one year to get on a mountain.
For most but Burrow is a real fast climber. And how do you leave Billy Cannon and Pete Maravich off just because in 20 years there will be nobody alive who has seen them play? Would Notre Dame leave Knute Rockne off just because it's been almost 100 years since he coached?
Agreed, dozens of figures in LSU athletics that deserve recognition. But the whole premise of the "Mt. Rushmore" exercise is to pick 4 - and only 4, no more, no less - who you would immortalize for all time. If you do a different number, its not Mt. Rushmore.
OK, lets vote Billy off the mountain. 594 yards and 5 TDs aren't even an afterthought. (Billy you can buy you way back on but you have to pay in real money) Maravich set records that will never be broken or even approached. He is on the mountain. Skip with 5 National Championships in 10 years not only owns the mountain. He can build and sell condos there if he wants. Somebody mentioned Pat Henry and his more National Championships than Alabama. But it's track. Not football. Not basketball or baseball. Track. And field. He had to be a great recruiter but how do you coach track? Or field? "Hey, you guys need to run faster. And you guys here need to jump higher." Shaq was the most dominant big man to play college basketball. Maybe ever. Never won any titles at LSU but that might be Dale. Brown's fault. He did win 4 NBA titles. The final chapter hasn't been written yet in The Book of Joe. Give him a rental with a purchase option if he leads us to the promised land. Without the bling why does he get on the mountain before the Honey Badger? Mount Rushmore has very limited space but there's still plenty of room at the Hotel California.
Go for it! Name it whatever you like, and I'll follow and give you credit for the name. But if we're talking about Rushmore, 4 shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be 4. 5 shall you not count, neither shall you count 3, unless then proceeding to 4. 6 is right out!
