Patrick Fisher came in each game and did the best job of any Punter LSU has ever had I believe. In my memory I don't remember anyone who on a consistent basis improved our field position. I would guess he gave our team at least an extra 25 yards a game with his kicking, maybe more. He will be sorely missed. Anyone know who will take his place? I also think he will be playing on Sundays next year adding another Tiger to watch in the NFL. :geaux:
Fisher was a stud this year and will be missed but don't forget about the greatest punter in LSU history Donnie Jones.:thumb: http://www.lsusports.net/ViewArticl...64&DB_OEM_ID=5200&ATCLID=175104&Q_SEASON=2003
I think Crutchfield will be the punter. He's listed as one on the depth chart. I hope someone drafts Fisher. I think his stellar play this season warrants someone taking a flyer on him in the late rounds. If I had to say unsung hero, moreso than underappreciated (since I don't think anyone's effort went unnoticed), then it would definitely be Fisher.
I thought Fisher was awesome was as well. Only thing he needs to work on is pooch punts and getting it to drop between the 20. Seems like every punt of his went 65 yards And I love how our last few punters were probably big enough to be linebackers too.:geaux:
Let us not forget one of the biggest plays of the year occurred with LSU down 14-6 with a 4th down near midfield against Tennessee. Miles pulled the trigger and called for a fake punt and Fisher threw a beautiful pass over the middle for a crucial game changing first down. LSU went on to score and make it 14-13, allowing LSU to make the defensive play of the game later on to win 21-14.
EDIT: Did anybody read his blog? The guy is extremely intelligent and a great writer. I was honestly blown away at how great of a writer he was. According to his bio, he wants to work for ESPN. It would be nice to see him as a sportswriter. That said, I will say that islstl made an extremely great point: "Let us not forget one of the biggest plays of the year occurred with LSU down 14-6 with a 4th down near midfield against Tennessee. More about that play: LSU’s fake punt for a first down with 12:03 left in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard pass from Patrick Fisher to Quinn Johnson was the first by the Tigers since Sept. 10, 2005 at Arizona State when Chris Jackson converted a first down on a 12-yard pass to Ronnie Prude. Fisher’s toss was also the first completion by an LSU punter since Jackson
No offense, but I have to think that Fisher wasn't the most under appreciated player on the team. He might have been the most under appreciated Tiger on special teams, though. My vote goes to two players, one on offense and one on defense- both worked hard andplayed well but never really received recognition for it: On offense, my vote goes to Jacob Hester. This guy turned out to be a pretty good back. A lot of Tiger fans didn't realize that we used Hester as much as we did. He got 36.8% of LSU's rushes this year, averaging 4.9 yards/carry. But still, you hardly ever heard his name mentioned since he was surrounded by so many good talents on offense. Also, another little known fact about Hester, he's married. And he's friends with USC's John David Booty, who couldn't attend Hester's wedding due to a college exam. On defense, my vote goes to Glenn Dorsey. Dorsey played DT for LSU this year, and had one of those successful but 'under-the-radar' type seasons. While opponents would gameplan and focus on other Tigers like Kirston Pittman, Craig Steltz, Tyson Jackson, and Ali Highsmith, Dorsey usually could sneak by offensive lineman and disrupt plays. You probably didn't hear his name too much, either; but I'm telling you, this guy was a big part of the Tigers' defense this year. Admittedly, Dorsey had a great supporting cast, but truthfully I believe this guy has what it takes to make it to the next level. My advice to him is to work hard and train for the combine to impress scouts and maybe improve his draft status. What you probably didn't know about Glenn Dorsey is that this guy, a college athlete, used to wear leg braces! I'm not making that up. He really did. And some think that he could have gone into the draft last year, but he came back this year presumably to get his degree. It's time that we recognized how integral these two were for LSU this year. That's my two "sense." :yelwink2:
