Being voted no. 1 by the AP is not winning a championship. There is a game to determine the champion, as provided by the current system of rules that USC agreed to.
Not to stir the pot, but did anyone really know what the AP trophy looked like until 2003 when the AP stirred the pot itself? All that matters to us is where the Crystal resides which is on LSU's campus for 2003 and 2007. You can enjoy the AP trophy all you want.
he dropped the discussion fellas. no reason to discuss this one AGAIN. '03 is over, nothing we say here is going to change it.
Absolute nonsense. LSU owns the entire BCS championship, not half of it. USC claims half, but they have nothing to stand on. USC finished first in the AP poll. Good for you. The AP poll is irrelevant since the advent of the BCS, which was created specifically to eliminate split championships. The BCS worked as promised--there is only one BCS champion. USC likely deserved to be in the BCS game more than Oklahoma did, but by the criteria all teams agreed on before the season, they just . . . didn't . . . qualify. Neither did Auburn in the 2004 BCS championship that USC actually won. Auburn deserved to be there more than Oklahoma did but they came in third in the BCS points and didn't get into the game. Them's the breaks, amigo. Auburn went out and got themselves 2004 National Championship rings, just like USC did in 2003, but USC owns the 2004 crystal football and doesn't have to share it with anybody. Same with the 2003 Crystal. All of it is in Baton Rouge, both halves. None of it is at USC. Don't worry, lots of schools (Oklahoma, Alabama, etc.) claim championships that are questionable, you are in good company.
So the logic works out that USC only got 1 championship no matter which side you fall on! They either believe that winning the BCS is the end all be all (like most people do) and they got their sole championship when they won their BSC crystal. Or they believe in split championships and they got half in 2003 with LSU and half in 2004 with AU. Either way, it adds up to 1 championship and not a 3-peat.
We need to rent another billboard in L.A.! Maybe put R. Bush and Mayo's pictures on it! And a slogan like, "You Fly, We Buy!" or "Excellence is Expensive".... That'll show 'em!
Here is where the AP National Champ debate begins and ends in my mind. The AP doesn't vote for their Nat Champ until after the BCS Bowls are played. Therefore acknowledging that the BCS Bowls determine the MNC. Hence the BCS National Champ game winner is the MNC. End of story.
The NCAA could clear this up once and for all by declaring the winner of the BCSCG the official NCAA Div. 1-A National Champion. That way the AP or any other organization could crown their NC and it would have absolutely zero relevance. By not doing this and allowing whatever groups to crown whichever school they want as NC, with the BCS having the highest visibility and credibility notwithstanding, the NCAA only adds fuel to the fire.
