This situation is absolutely appalling. I almost have more questions than opinions because it makes so little sense to me. My biggest question is, why? What point is there to build this $100-million mosque in NYC in the shadow of the site where Muslim terrorists scored their biggest attack ever, flamboyantly destroying two of the biggest symbols of American power? Why there? I'm also at a loss as to why that council approved it almost unanimously at 29-1. Did they support it the name of "diversity" and "tolerance"? How many mosques are in NYC? A hundred? More? Why does this new mega-mosque have to built right next door to the hole that used to be the World Trade Center, before the new building is even up? Just because we Americans may get distracted easily doesn't mean that people of this radical ideology don't want us dead and our free way of life eliminated. There is a war going on whether people choose to pay attention to it or not. If this mosque is built, it will be an almost unsurpassable propaganda victory for the radical Islamists who we're in a shooting war with overseas, in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, etc. Oh, and the planned opening date is on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. You cannot tell me that the people behind this mosque have pure intentions.
well it isnt really next door, it is a couple blocks away: there are churches and synagogues and mosques all over the city, everywhere you go, so i dont see it as a big deal. really i feel like at no place in the city are you more than a few blocks away from some religious place. no big deal.
To avoid lawsuits likely. The mayor has stated that the city is not in the business of preferring one religion over another. It would open up a can of worms that the city doesn't want to deal with because they don't have a real legal reason to forbid any church to locate anywhere they want to. "I think it's fair to say if somebody was going to try, on that piece of property, to build a church or a synagogue, nobody would be yelling and screaming," The New York Post quoted Bloomberg, as saying. They probably think that this will be averted in other ways, perhaps by vehemence of public reaction. The imam who is behind this wants it to "bridge the great divide" between Muslims and the rest of America. This kind of divisive reaction will make that line a hard sell. Some are trying more practical and legal means, like declaring the 152-year-old building a protected historical landmark, preventing its demolition to make way for the new center. It wouldn't stop them from using the old building, but it would prevent the kind of showplace that they want. 93 at latest count, 20 in Manhattan. High visibility obviously. But I think it would bring them more trouble than it is worth. It will be subject to incessant demonstrations, harassment, and possibly retaliatory attacks from our own radicals. It will be interesting to see how the imam deals with the immense protests that this is generating. If he seeks to address concerns and tries to build a better "bridge" then perhaps they may be dealt with rationally. If he just fans the fire, then you can be sure that this is all about media consumption in the islamic world demonstrating that "America" hates Islam. The problem is that this is not the Al Qaeda Cultural Center, it is an Islamic Cultural Center. There is a difference between the few thousand Al Qaeda radicals who bombed the WTC and the 1.2 billion muslims in the world and it important for the US to be seen as being an enemy to Al Qaeda, not to a religion. Freedom of religion is a basic part of our Constitution and what we are all about here. These are American muslims and the City must tread carefully to avoid breaking our own laws. Better to find ways to discourage this project and cause them to rethink their plans than to ban it illegally, have it tossed out of court, and deliver them unshakable legal grounds to stay there and an opportunity to publicly embarrass the US justice system.
When the muslims acknowledge that the radical element of their religion exists, maybe I'll cut them a little slack. And how sure are you that there are only a few thousand radicals out of the 1.2 billion. I suspect the number is a lot larger. If the aryan nation wanted to buy the motel where Dr. MLK was killed and turn it into a recruitment center, would there be an outcry? I guarantee you the politicians wouldn't approve it. I am not in favor of kissing muslim a$$ just to appear benevolent. I say watch those MFers every move by any means available.
This looks like a fun place to post this video: No I have not tried to verify this or debunk the theme, but here is one site that does: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8189231.stm
This planned mosque seems like it is more like a slap-in-the face to radical Islamists. For one, radical Islamic countries view any of their citizens living in the evil country of the USA as traitors. It’s a slap in the face of any radical Muslim to see that any of their fellow Muslims would choose to make the USA their home. Radical Islamic countries have intensely strict rules of life that they force their citizens to follow. In the USA, they are free from that. Secondly, the Muslims behind this planned mosque are flaunting it as a counterbalance to Islamic radicalism...radical Islamic countries have foreign agents (basically hitmen) in other countries and the people behind the new mosque that is disrespecting fundamentalist Islam countries will be on their hit-list. Third, this planned mosque will include a 500-seat performing arts venue, a swimming pool and a basketball court. "There's nothing like it," said Rauf, adding that facilities will be open to all New Yorkers. That is a serious slap in the face to fanatical Islam countries, where women are whipped in public if they show any skin. A swimming pool in a mosque? And open to all? This is seriously traitorous to fundamental Islam. Fourth, look at the pic below of this planned mosque. Does that look like a mosque that fundamental Islamists will be proud of? Looks like a Westernized-mosque of Muslims that have sold-out fanatical Islam. All in all, this looks like a big victory against fundamental Islam, and a huge slap in the face to what Bin Laden tried to do with 9/11. Having it built so close to the World Trade Center attacks makes it more of a slap in the face to Bin Laden. Also, it hopefully results in more US protection of the leaders and people behind this mosque who will be on the hit-list of every fanatic Muslim out there for this treason. Plan for mosque near World Trade Center site moves ahead
It may be a lot lower. Intelligence sources say only about 500 are left in Afghanistan and Pakistan. There are another couple of hundred in Yemen, a few hundred loosely affiliated copycats in Iraq, and a few dozen in Somalia. Not every muslim with a turban and an AK-47 is Al Qaeda. Most of them are fighting each other in Afghnaistan, Iran, Pakistan, Yemen, and Malaysia and have been for milllenia. The biggest and most dangerous (Hezbollah and Hamas) are solely concerned with Israel. Al Qaeda is the only group that has taken on the US on our territory. We can't lose focus trying to blame ever angry, illiterate raghead in the world while we still have living members of Al Qaeda breather air on the planet. Getting all of them is achievable if we don't get stupid and waste effort trying to keep Farrakhan from opening a temple somewhere. Washington Post Harpers Magazine There is an outcry wherever they appear. Google "Aryan Nation protest" and see. The point is that despite widespread popular public disapproval, our laws permit muslim citizens to act as citizens and the governments are bound by the law.
There are sympathizers, potential recruits and just generally pissed off people among them right here on our soil. There are more than 500 cab drivers in NYC that would delight in killing off a few infidels.
