Chavis ran a 4-3 defense that was dominating. I believe Montgomery will do very well. He is fast and was able to get in the opposing backfields. Haven't paid attention to Houston's DL either. I'm not an Xand O's person and haven't played since '86. I just love LSU football and am glad to see the talent the team and coaches have helped hone go to the next level. http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...nce-call/f69fbf24-12b0-41b9-ac4c-fa3aed06beca Sonics ready also.
Mario Williams was moved to OLB for Wade Phillips' first year in Houston. Last year, Barwin and Brooks Reed were the starters with the rookie Whitney Merciless (1st round pick) getting 6 sacks as the backup. Barwin left via free agency so now Reed and Merciless will start with Montgomery the likely backup. Mario was a big OLB and Montgomery will be also. Not sure if he would also get consideration at DE.
While he played a 4-3 defensive scheme at LSU, Texans linebackers coach Reggie Herring was not concerned with Montgomery making the transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme. Herring said that since outside linebackers were not generally made in college, coaches were used to cultivating 4-3 players in the NFL to fit the Texans style of defense. Herring likes the flexibility that Montgomery offers with his ability to play the run, pass rush, and his speed to power. Montgomery’s above average play strength was his strong suit but he would need to work on his ability to drop back. (in coverage) “We will throw him into the fire early to see if he can. We can alway move him over (to the weakside linebacker),” Herring said. Herring also alluded to moving Brooks Reed over to inside linebacker if needed and was excited about the possibilities. Montgomery: “You don’t understand how grateful I am for this opportunity. I’m going to show you that you made the right selection,” Montgomery said to SportsRadio 610 immediately following his selection. “I can train to do anything. I’m just so excited and ready for this opportunity.”
From the perspective of an expert on the Dallas Cowboys comparing and contrasting Sam to their 2012 Pro Bowl OLB Anthony Spencer... Scouting Report (Sam) will lure some teams simply because of his size/speed combination. After watching Montgomery against Alabama, Washington, and Florida...The problem is that Montgomery is consistently slow off of the ball. You can watch just about any other play in that Alabama game and see how much later Montgomery moves after the snap as compared to his teammates...he’s not very quick. ... Montgomery also has some trouble against the run. Specifically, he doesn’t get off of blocks well, as you can see at the 3:10, 3:38, 3:47, and 3:56 marks above. Three of those plays were heads-up against a tight end, and that’s a problem. As a pass-rusher, Montgomery can still reach the quarterback because he’s strong and, when he gets moving, he’s powerful. If he goes to a 3-4 team and he’s asked to drop into coverage, he might have some issues because he’s rather stiff. That’s not necessarily a death sentence, though; Anthony Spencer is a stiff player who has played pretty well in coverage in Dallas. Fit In Dallas If the Cowboys let Spencer walk and need to find a strong-side (OLB), I’m not sure Montgomery is it. He can’t disengage from blocks like Spencer, failing to use his long arms to his advantage. For someone who could very well be average or worse against the run, you’d like more upside as a pass-rusher. Montgomery and Spencer are otherwise somewhat similar players, though, so it’s possible the ‘Boys will give Montgomery a long look.
Merciless? Seriously, his name is Merciless? Did they draft him from the WWE? Is his nickname "Ming?" What a great name for a defensive player!
I already respect you but throwing out a Flash Gordon reference forces me to think even more highly of you.
