little league isnt really the same, bub. my sister was on my tee-ball team. not sure if you are aware of this but it gets harder to compete as you go up in level. high level national champ type teams are really really good. so maybe your female catcher in little league is strong. my guess is her career ends before the majors.
I'm kind of seeing what Martin is saying. He is basically saying that if she earns a spot on this team based on skill alone, and is better than everyone else that tries out, then yes she deserves a spot on the team. But don't give her a spot on the team just because she is a woman. That's kind of like affirmative action crossing over to the sporting world.
For those doubting whether this is a publicity stunt, be honest and ask yourself whether you or anybody else would know who Mo Isom is if she hadn't announced last year she was trying out for the team.
This thread continues to amaze me. Martin is right guys (and equally proficient female posters). Women cannot compete athletically with men of equal talent and skill. Period. I think people get put off with how matter-of-fact Martin is about this, but it's the truth. I made this comment when the thread first started, and I'll say it again: it will be a sad state of affairs when the best kicker on the LSU football team is a female, walk-on, soccer player. If we can't do better than that, we have no business expecting SEC and national championships.
College and pro sports are some of the last remaining institutions resembling a true meritocracy. Players and coaches want to win. To that end they will do everything legally possible to achieve that. If you don't perform, you're cut or fired, and the best performer will get the spot. There's a reason why you don't see 400-lb couch potatoes on college basketball teams, even if they feel discriminated against or they're "underrepresented." They take a spot away from an athlete who's worked hard and gives the team a chance to win. There's likely a good reason why in all of D-1A college football you can count the number of female players on one hand. It's not an Illuminati conspiracy, or some vast consensus among male chauvinist pigs, to keep women barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. It's because the male competition is better. If the female kicker was the best performer, she would get the job. I won't preclude the possibility of Isom being the best kicker available, though it's very unlikely IMO. Sexism is denying her the opportunity to compete, which nobody here is arguing. It is patently ridiculous, however, to suggest that a woman should take a spot away from a more qualified player to strike a blow for "gender equality" in sports, which I also haven't seen Isom or anybody else here claim.
very, very, very unlikely. there are almost surely hundreds if not thousands of men in the baton rouge area with better kicking skills, many of whom kicked in high school. any relatively strong and athletic soccer player can go out to the park and boot some nice long FG, as mo issom may be able to do. but to be consistently long and accurate is damn hard and women cant really do it, in the same sense that women cant really fight in mens MMA, even if they have the size. they just are not strong.
yes, lots of people will argue lots of things. my hope is that these ladies find lovely husbands and make them the tastiest sandwiches possible.
