"We're going to coach 'em aggressively" "It won't happen anymore". Just heard it on the news in a clip from his presser. Not sure what to make of it. On one hand he spoke about it with conviction (course, he speaks like that about most things) on the other- isn't this essentially the same thing he's said about problems all year?
i know this is pretty cliche today, but i think miles really just realizes that at this point he's lost the fans almost totally and is just another season like this away from losing his job. even if that's not the case, he knows enough to not come out and talk about how well they played again.
Not disagreeing with you but I don't think he has lost any of the fans. In reality, deep down inside everyone wants to be on board and are in some cases just: in shock, disappointed, frustrated, embarrassed, even delusional perhaps? Take your pick. There's a lot of emotions spewing forth from LSU fans right now and they stem from many different origins.
An interesting point was made briefly in another thread in regard to Miles' lack of player development skills or his ability to identify the right position for a player. I would have to add overall team discipline as another weak point, at least from what I've seen at LSU. Never saw any Okie St. games so no info. Anyway, just taking a shot at CLM's strengths and weakness: Strengths: Recruiting (really seems to connect with the kids and parents from reports) Loyalty (may have caused some problems this year but must be considered a positive) Coachin to Win (as much crap as the fans spew about coaching staff/qb play etc I think the staff was reluctant to run and hide and generally wanted to tough it out, call the play and roll the dice. Have to admit I prefer that to the alternative....of course when it goes wrong you do get egg on your face but I don't think CLM really gives a damn....) Hiring Staff (Pelini and Crowton both great hires....those have to outweigh the DC fiasco as long as it is corrected this offseason) Weaknesses: Stubborness (seems reluctant to change course of action when necessary.....ex. is defering on kickoffs everytime with a swiss cheese-like defense.....how often was LSU behind this year....seemed like every game within the first 5 min.) Clock Management (often in poor situations before half or game end due to bad use of TOs) Demeanor and Discipline (I hate to say it but he has to be more cutthroat with these players.....failure to fufill your responsibilties must have consequences....) Lastly I have to say Miles has shown an ability to grow as a coach in his time here and I think he will rise to the occasion. just my .02
I just heard the audio on tigerrag's website and it sounded like Miles was trying to remain calm. When he was pressed on just what did he say to the player following the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he said he told him you just can't do that. Well that's not what I was screaming at the TV. I'm certainly not a Miles critic at all, but I wanted to puke when I saw him arm in arm with the DE. I wouldn't call that fatherly advice because my father would have torn me a new one! And there would have been serious consequences to make me think through my actions instead of reacting. What happens in the locker room and on the practice field should maybe be private, and not public knowledge but I would be willing to bet that my dad would be more severe than coach Miles.
Kinda of agree with you on that one. He could have at least yelled, "BUT I LOVE YA MAN" and looked like he was ripping him.
Seriously? Let's pretend for a moment that you are correct. How friggin' sad is THAT!? One disapointing (but winning) season after three great ones (including a crystal football), and he's lost the fans? If that were true, I'd be embarrassed for the "fans". Luckily, I think you're speaking for yourself and a few others. At least, that's what I choose to believe. I'd hate to think our fan base is that irrational, childish, short-memoried and disloyal.
I'm confused about where the discipline problems are coming from. Can anyone tell me how many of our players have been suspended/arrested since the start of the season? Penalties happen. Would you say Mark Richt has a discipline problem? His team is the most penalized team in the SEC, followed by Florida.
one thing miles gets no credit for this year is turning the penatlies around this year. LSU was the most penalized team in the nation last year and this year i think they are in themiddle of the sec. however, i think the "discipline problems" everyone speaks of is on field stuff. sloppy tackling, stupid decisions, no intensity, etc. i think you can label things fundamentals instead of discipline but i think both apply. edit: the other thing is accountability. love saban or hate him everyone loved that clip of him ripping into travis daniels. people may not want saban back, but they want a coach who will do that.
