I've been wondering if the play was actually designed to go to LaFell, who was about 10-15yds in front of Byrd, was WIDE open, and had about 10 yards of running room behind him. He may not have scored, but he would have easily gotten the first down. Byrd drew the other 2 defenders back towards him as soon as Kieland gripped the ball to throw it, and the LBs/CBs were already committed to KW, leaving LaFell completely unspoken for. So it kind of seemed like it was supposed to go to LaFell by design because of the decoying that Byrd and Williams did. But it's almost as if Kieland checked down to Byrd for the TD.
Ditto for me. I remember watching it go way over some LSU receiver's head and thought "ack! beautiful call but he missed him wide open!". Then 1/2 second later I was "YES! beautiful pass!".
I heard Jimbo called the play from Tallahassee, where he evidently wasn't very preoccupied calling plays for FSU! But seriously, what a friggin awesome play call. It is so much fun to watch our offense on the field with Miles/Crowton at the helm!
I cannot think of two better heads working together. Crowton is an offensive genius who has been around college football for quite a while and he gets to work with awesome talent and a coach that has a brass pair. Talk about a dream job, and a nightmare for opposing coaches. :thumb:
Well, they certainly called a phenomenal second half, and have done a very good job together overall, but we need to be careful about getting to high on the hog here.
I don't think you run that play hoping to hit a receiver 10 yards downfield. You're looking for the home run ball.
