Very well could be. I'm talking specifically about the policies that these guys generally buy that protect their future earnings against injury. From what I understand, there has to be an injury that totally prevents the player from earning a dollar in the pros. What you're talking about could be something different or perhaps that guy was injured to where he couldn't play any more. That was a bad injury.
Yeah I'm very familiar with the policy you're referring to. As mentioned earlier only a few companies even write the policy, Lloyd's of London being one of the very first to do so. I didn't think those policies were that expensive because the likelihood of a catastrophic injury preventing a true prospect from ever playing professionally is relatively low. ACL's don't keep real prospects out of the pros. Todd Gurley went first round while in recovery. Not much of anything short of spinal injuries and degenerative conditions tend to do that anymore.
I've heard the same thing about the football policies. If Fournette blows out his knee Lattimore-stlye and drops to the 4th round, he wouldn't get a penny even if he had a $10m policy. Fournette didn't look ready for the NFL last year. He does this year as a 20 yr old (and turns 21 in January). Maybe there should be a revision to the process that any 21 year old (at time of draft) is eligible even if they haven't been out of high school for 3 years. I think they should wait a couple of years before implementing though.
