    Last chance, Les.

You can bring a friend this time.

Michigan fired Brady Hoke on Tuesday and now gets a third chance to bring in LSU coach Les Miles, this time with a bonus.

The Wolverines could double down and grab Bo Pelini, who worked with Miles at LSU before taking the job at Nebraska in 2007, as a defensive coordinator. That's the combination that led LSU to a 38-24 win against Ohio State in the 2008 BCS championship game.

MORE: 10 Michigan coaching candidates | Wolverines should keep 'Michigan Man' | Top 10 Wolverines of all

Seven years and two coaches later, none of those distractions are in play for either school. LSU isn’t in a SEC or national championship. Pelini, fired by Nebraska on Friday, also is available. Miles can’t say Michigan is the last thing on his mind. Otherwise he wouldn’t have tweeted this before the game against Ohio State.

Everybody knows the back story. Miles loves Michigan. He played for Bo Schembechler at Michigan in 1974-75. He served as an assistant for Bo. He looks like Bo. He talks like Bo. He’s quirky like Bo. He might think he’s Bo in a George Patton-like sense. Close your eyes and listen to these:

Michigan is going to have a hard time landing one of the Harbaughs, who both are still in the thick of a NFL playoff race that will stretch into January. Yet Wolverines’ fans should have no reservations about landing Miles. It’s not a consolation prize.

LINEMAKERS: Odds on who will be next Michigan coach

We know the two major nitpicks.

    "Miles is too old."

Miles is 61. Steve Spurrier took over at South Carolina at 60 years old. This season notwithstanding, that worked out.

    "Miles’ clock management is questionable."

Miles is 56-24 in the toughest conference in America the last 10 years, second only to Alabama (61-19). He’s the only coach who has consistently rebelled against Nick Saban's Death Star in Tuscaloosa.

Michigan is 42-38 in Big Ten play in the same stretch, which ranks sixth in the conference. Miles would have no problem mixing it up with Michigan State's Mark Dantonio and Ohio State's Urban Meyer, who are a combined 9-2 against the Wolverines.

Miles would get their attention. He gets everybody’s attention.

As far as Michigan is concerned, Miles would be an early Christmas gift. The decision rests with Miles, who still has a young team built around Leonard Fournette for at least the next two years. Would he be willing to leave the SEC sausage grinder for a chance to resurrect his alma mater?

He should, and his call afterward should be to Pelini. Sure, Michigan fans want to keep defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. Just remember that the Wolverines allowed 37 points per game in losses to Michigan State and Ohio State the last two seasons. LSU allowed 15.7 points per game with Pelini from 2005-07.

Miles could even persuade offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, also a former Michigan assistant, to Ann Arbor.

Miles can eat grass. Pelini can bring his cat. Cameron can develop a quarterback. It’s a win-win-win situation for Michigan.

Miles could give Michigan seven years, and it wouldn’t take much to top the last seven years. The only question is whether or not Miles can still hear Schembechler’s six-word mantra ringing in his ears 1,100 miles away from Ann Arbor.

"Those who stay will be champions."

What about those who come back? Let’s find out once and for all.

    Last chance, Les.

I teach with a Michigan guy whose brother apparently/alledgedlly is in the know. His take mirrors the reports that Michigan lacks confidence Les would accept, and they do not want a public dis.

I never touch prop bets because they tend to be so absurd. They are entertaining.

Miles' agent used the job opening for leverage, is it possible that Arkansas didn't necessarily want miles?
