I don't think Miami did it on its own. They were helped by the fact that they beat Florida State, who utterly demolished BYU. FSU's victory would have been a candidate for upset of the season had a school that had only won 1 of its last 16 games not upset USC that very same day.
it helps that they really good on offense too. Jacory Harris looks really good for a guy who has only started 4 or 5 games.
For what it is worth, that same FSU barely escaped getting upset at home by Ryan Perrilloux and Div II Jacksonville State on Sept 12 (week before they played BYU). Florida State needed two scores in the final 35 seconds to avoid arguably one of the most embarrassing upsets in school history. Ty Jones' 1-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left put the Seminoles ahead of lower-division Jacksonville (Ala.) State and teammate Kevin McNeil returned a fumble for a score 21 seconds later to seal the 19-9 victory.
The Canes are the only team to have beaten two ranked teams so far this season. Based on the games I have seen so far involving top ranked teams I would rank them #2 behind #1 Alabama and ahead of #3 Florida and #4 Texas (my rankings) If there were no polls out until this week Miami would be ranked a lot higher than 9th and 10th. I have been so far in this young season pretty much unimpressed but almost all of the so called top teams, including LSU. I put Alabama ahead of Miami just because of a gut feeling that right now they are the best. A lot of things will change as the season progresses
Good teams are known to play up or down to the level of their competion. I hope that that is the case with LSU so far
See and this is where I am not completely sold. I think J. Harris is a great kid, very humble in his interviews and all....... But, You can hardly call what FSU or Ga Tech ran out on the field a defense. I have not seen a defender within 15 yrds of any of the guys he threw to. He also hasn't had much pressure put on him either. Not saying he isn't good, I just want to see what he does when he has to throw to a not wide open man or when he is on the run.
See what i saw with Harris that has impressed me, was the way he was able to hit his receivers in stride on the deep ball, and how calm he is in the pocket. I haven't seen a quarterback all year that has made those throws, with such a tight spiral. check the throw at the 2 minute 30 second mark, under pressure. Even if you put guys on top of the receivers, those balls were thrown perfectly. YouTube - (HD) Jacory Harris leads the Hurricanes to a game winning TD vs. FSU
Kids the real deal so far. You cant say if he had this or that. His performance warrants his praise against 2 conference opponents. They basically have the toughest first 4 games in the nation. Va Tech will be a real test, but their defense isnt up to par this year as well. people are averaging over 200 yards running on a Bud Foster defense.
