I agree with this. If anything, Miles proved this year that he can be successful running a two QB system. Kragthorpe's system is relatively simple, particularly as compared to Crowton's. That will help all 3 QBs, but ultimately works in Mettenberger's favor. That means that he'll be on somewhat equal footing as JJ and Lee heading into spring. Of course, Mile favors experience, but he's also shown that he's willing to try something different if the status quo ain't cuttin' it. If JJ falls out like he did this year, we will definitely see #8. However, I am of the opinion that JJ will have a lot better year in 2011. Remember, he was highly touted as a pro-style QB prospect, yet he's been under the tutelage of a ???? system OC his entire career. Either way, I think we'll be just fine.
I think Mettenberger hits the ground running under a new OC and will be expected to start. Jefferson and Lee have had their opportunities and now Mettenberger will get his. I think we see Jefferson as a change-up quarterback inside the red zone to take advantage of his legs.
This scenario wouldn't surprise me, but I also wouldn't be surprised if, with some quality QB coaching, JJ takes a giant leap forward. If we get a JJ that is just a little better than 2009 JJ or last five games of 2010 JJ, we'll have a pretty good JJ.
I really think JJ may have turned a corner, maybe not "the" corner, but at least "a" corner. I say that b/c he's shown flashes in the past only to regress. However, the flashes he showed in the latter half of 2010 were brighter and more sustained than any of the flashes in 2008 or 2009. If he can improve upon the pace he was at in the latter half of 2010 then he deserves as much playing time as he can earn. Earn being the key. If Mettenberger outperformes him, even if he is playing well, then so be it. JJ has had 2+ years to grab the starting role by the horns and if he is beaten out by Mettenberger then at least he was given ample opportunity to succeed. I wouldn't count Lee out yet either. He has shown flashes as well. He really hasn't had much of an opportunity to sustain any improvement since 2008. That's more due to JJ's improvement at the end of 2010. He just really needed to take a step back in 2009. I believe it was what was best for him and the team. Hopefully one of the three really steps up in the spring and takes the job. I'm really kinda rooting for all three of 'em. I'll say this: if Lee or JJ can step up and lead LSU to a SEC or BCS title, it would be one of the biggest redemption stories of an embattled college QB that I've ever seen or heard of. It'd be pretty amazing...and inspiring.
"If you want seniority...join the army." I think that pretty much sums up Kragthorpe's feelings on who will start at QB. Whoever impresses the coach the most in the spring & fall practices leading up to the Oregon game will get the start. Experience with the team may be a plus, but it will not be the deciding factor.
I pray to God this is the case. I think Jefferson will serve a definite purpose, but for the sake of the 2011 season, he better not be our full time starting QB.
I'll take that bet. As the new OC said "if you want seniority join the army." Best passer will get the job. If Mett is as advertised, JJ will have to pick up his passing game a few notches. I feel like its been years since we've had a decent passing game. and p.s. It wasnt Crowton's fault.
You are crazy. The only way Jefferson starts more than the first 3 games is if A) Mett is hurt; or B) He improves drastically With a new OC who focuses on QB development, it's not impossible for Jefferson to really improve. If that's the case, great. But otherwise, Mett will start by game 4.
i agree. i dont know if jj will improve, but i believe a big part of what he has lacked is a good qb coach. hopefully, he can get his head uncluttered from some things. if not, mett will start. and even then, i think both jj and jl may become better back ups simply from coaching.
I think you are absolutely right with all of your comments in this thread. Negatigers have really started early, and are boldly making predictions that both Krag and CLM have since directly addressed and said the opposite. Here is a link to CLMs direct comments about this issue, it's about mid-way in the video. He says "I expect Zack Mettenberger to come in and start". Those were his words, not just "compete for the starting position". Linemen, athleticism highlight 2011 LSU football recruiting class - Video | NOLA.com
