He won't be leaving early for the draft, and with the experience he'll gain this season I expect him to straight up beat defenses asses next season.
The big question becomes does LSU have the passing game to beat Alabama and to stay undefeated (or at worst have 1 loss) by the time we play them? We looked much better in terms of wide receiver play in this game. But again, it's Idaho. I didn't like Les Miles' answer during the halftime interview of the North Texas game when asked about the interception in the redzone and general play of Mettenberger. His answer was "I think maybe we should run it more down there". I just don't want us in the same position as the two meetings last year when Alabama was able to stop our vaunted running game and we had nothing to offer in the passing game to combat it. We're going to beat Alabama because Mettenberger has a good game. not in spite of him having a bad game.
Question is if our opponents have gotten steadily weaker. Hopefully AU will give us a better idea of what we got.
Mettenberger is still making rookie mistakes . . . not watching the play clock, throwing foolish goal line interceptions, etc. I kind of wish he'd gotten more PT last year to have more of this behind him. But he's hitting his receivers and I get the feeling that we have shown little of the passing offense so far.
There are definitely times that his inexperience shows. His talent shows more often, though. I'm simply thankful that he's had the schedule to get some rookie mistakes out of the way, unlike the trial by fire that last year would've been. These first 3 weeks, albeit boring, have been helpful. I hope.
Agreed, more PT last year would have been beneficial. As for the mistakes this year, it's better to make them vs UNT and Idaho than vs better SEC teams. That said, hopefully we don't see anymore of that. Overall, though, he looks good -- poised and confident, and this is certainly something we haven't seen out of an LSU QB since Matt Flynn.
If any of you have a chance check out Dandydon.com this morning he had some interesting comparisons statistically from this years team and last years team.....worth a look.
Mett looks good other than the mistakes here and there. It's his first season, he obviously has room for improvement. But if you ask me, and I know you ain't asking me, Mett is breathing new life into this offensive line. One thing LSU has needed for the last few years is a bad ass offense to match its defense. I think we're well on our way to that guys and gals. He's going to learn, he's definitely going to screw up, and a lot of you will hand him a cup of poop soup over it. But I think in the end, we're going to be in for a wild ride. As he gains experience and confidence out there, he will be ready to face whatever line they present him with. At least I am hoping so!
