Early Doucet did not score in that game. Neither did Dickson. Hester up the gut. Murphy to the right, Murphy to the left. 3rd and long, Hester up the gut, again. That's all I saw. Who is Les Miles?
Given a good passing game with a qb not prone to turn the ball over I believe Miles would like about a 60-40 split. And that would suit me just fine. Throw for about 200 and run for about 200, throw on running downs and run on some passing downs. Dominate! But Mett does have to prove he can protect the ball, if not we will see the continuation of conservative play calling because Les will not want to see a repeat of what we saw for a couple of years when JL and JJ were throwing picks. The turnover battle is just way too important. Smart decisions and putting the ball where only our guys can catch it will be paramount.
Exactly. What some fail to understand is that Les Miles isn't a proponent of "boring" football. (How anyone could really find LSU football boring under Miles is beyond me, but I digress...) He IS a huge proponent of winning the turnover battle and ball control. Running the ball, ultimately, leads to more wins. It certainly isn't as sexy as an all-passing attack, but I always think back to a game Texas Tech played in a few years back. They were beating OU in the 4th quarter, up by at least a couple of scores. I was stoked because, well, I pull against OU at every opportunity possible. Anyway, TT eventually won the game, but they came very close to allowing a comeback because they could NOT run the ball--at all. Without a running game, they continually gave the freakin' ball back to OU and allowed them to significantly close the gap. Oh, and I remember a game in '94 that most of you will also remember. Curley Hallman continued to pass the freakin' ball at AU and allowed a very improbable comeback on a gazillion interceptions in the 4th quarter. A running game is a winning coach's best friend.
People are just afraid because we have not been able to pass the ball when we needed to the last few years. Matt Flynn and 2007 was a long time ago... If Mett is what we think he is, things will be different. We will never be pass happy but the offense will be more balanced.
Exactly, we need to be able to punish a team for taking away the run. I am hoping Miles has more confidence in Mett.
