It makes sense. Keep him around for a year...maybe two until the young guys get some notches in their belt. I don't like the guy, personally....but I know how badly he wants to win. He is a great possession receiver (had 70 catches last year) and we could use his veteran leadership in the locker room for the young guys like Meachem and Colston. Why not?
Sure. He's a veteran that wants to win. Don't get me wrong, like I said in an earlier post, I don't really like the guy. But you can't deny his passion for the game and his hunger for a ring.
I don't want these young guys to act like him. Sure he wants to win championships, but who in the NFL doesn't. The difference is he wants to be 100% of the offense on the way there. Not a team playa. Maybe that will change now that his career is sputtering to an end.
As much as I hate Meshawn he has toned it down some and it would be a good pickup for the saints. I still can't stand the guy and if he even looks like he wants to get out of line the saints should boot him. I also would not offer him a very large or long contract. JMO
So I guess the New York offer for a 1 yr free agent contrat didnt excite him. I didnt think it would. I hope you are right because he would be a great fit for the team. Payton loves those big TE type players and he would fit that mold and then some. We all know that Brees loves dishing it to those kid of players that sit in the hole of the defense and finds the open space.
Keyshawn is the prototypical WR for this Saints offense (big and smart). You don't need speed as much as you need to get in the open spaces, which is Keyshawn's #1 strength. The only thing keeping this from reality is Key's character issues. Arguing with your head coach on national TV during the middle of a game is something I am sure Payton hasn't forgotten about Johnson. For this reason, I now believe we won't sign Johnson. And it is for the better ultimately. We don't need any potential lockerroom cancers.
