New Orleans Saints sell Superdome naming rights to Mercedes-Benz - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com
Only positive that we got a good brand name, I could not stomach something like the Jiffy Lube Super Dome.
I'm really on the fence about this. On the one hand, it's always going to be the Louisiana Superdome to me, no matter who buys the naming rights. And I'm a little disappointed by the fact that a non-Louisiana company bought the rights to have its name on the building. (I was holding out hope for something like Tabasco or even Entergy.) On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz is a very well respected, world wide company that produces a top of the line product. I can't see how having M-B associated with the Saints, New Orleans and Louisiana is going to be a bad thing. I'm also sure having the Superdome associated with such a well respected brand is going to take some people by surprise. After all, to the minds of many outside of Louisiana, a more fitting name might have been the Swamp People Superdome.
I think it's great. Anything to make the Saints more financially viable in New Orleans is good with me. You know, it wasn't long ago that we almost lost them to San Antonio.
Ends state subsidies which is a great thing, Mercedes is waaaaay better than some of the sponsors like stated and who gives a chit, it's still the Super Dome. It's just the name of a building.
The bottom line is this should get the state off the hook as a revenue source for the Saints. And considering it took about 10 years to make this happen, I'm sure every Louisiana-based company that would even come close to having the money to enter a deal like this one was approached. No takers. Welcome to Who Dat! nation, Benz!
1) I don't know anyone who refers to it as the Louisiana Superdome. I always hear "we're catching the Saints game at the Dome" or "You go to the boat show at the Superdome?". So I don't really care whose name is in front of it. I'm just glad it was a solid brand instead of something like Entergy or a bank. Honestly, my biggest fear was that some half-rate organization would fork over dough for it. 2) I am disappointed that Trojan didn't step up and buy the naming rights. I would have been proud to see the Saints play in the TROJANĀ® Condome.
