That I don't remember. I'll always remember the second coming of Earl Campbell, Cecil the diesel Collins being taken away from us after getting a glimpse of his greatness. That was tragic. He could have left LSU as the greatest football player in our history. That's how good he was.
I was at the game when he got his 1st touch, which was a quick slant that went for about a 50 yard TD. Ridiculous speed.
Xavier Carter was my favorite LSU player when I was cutting my teeth on the Tigers. Loved him and Skylar Green. Then Laron Landry came around and he was the dude of dudes.
A similar player to Carter was Slip Watkins. He was a RB that came in the same year as Harvey Williams and Eddie Fuller, plus Sammy Martin was already on the roster. Watkins had crazy speed and bounced back and forth between RB and WR his whole career, and again, he scored on his first touch as a Tiger, turned a little buttonhook route into about a 70 yarder. You could see the cornerback he beat just give up after about 10 yards; he knew he was toast. Watkins did very little after that.
Someone must have told Cecil at some point that with his combo of size and speed, he should be illegal. He took it to heart......
