Iirc, he wanted faulk to be a db... I hated the LA kids playing for other teams... Dunn, Ed Reed, minor, etc...
Yes, no one really knew who Spurrier was in '86 either. We passed for someone we knew more about. So he just kicked our ass for 10 years.
He didn't go to Duke until 87. When he applied for the LSU job he was HC of the Tampa Bay Bandits for 2 years. Assistant jobs before that. But of course we only hire proven commodities, no up and comers for us.
Well, Kiffen is an opposite example of hiring someone with no proven HC experience. You think the Oakland Raiders are happy they did that? Cherry picking a HoF coach who was once considered for HC at LSU while he was a coord. is easy to do. I'm sure our coaching lists of potential candidates after Arnsparger, Archer, Dinardo, Hallman, Saban, and Miles all include unproven/up and coming Coord's, and if you went through that list and tracked their careers, I bet very few ended up with careers like Spurrier.
I hear what you're saying but it's a crap shoot no matter who we hire. I agree that Fisher is the safer bet and I'll be happy if we get him but I also think Herman is just as much a sure thing as any other coach and that dude is exciting. It's gonna be hard to watch some other team ride him to greatness.
I hear ya, man, and you may be right. I'd be elated with Fisher though, even if Herman proves to be what everyone seems to think he is on this thread. Fisher matches up great for LSU. I wouldn't be unhappy with Herman, just to be clear. If you trust BHelm, it seems all of this is just conjecture, and Fisher's the guy.
I'm good with that. There shouldn't be any drop off in recruiting and we'll be competitive with any team in the West with a balanced, watchable offense. That checks my boxes.
