Believe it or not but I have already watched the game again in its entirety (sped thru of course). Is there anyone on this board that can definitely support the fact that he even sees the field of play, much less see so much action as he actually does? Someone questioned Pelini a couple games back about McCray and he said he was absolutely comfortable with him back there.
Nutt knew it and went after him tonight. As soon as he went in for the Arky 2 pt. conversion, I knew what was coming.
I thought that Jacob Cutera was awful in the middle tonight. We really missed Beckwith full time. Cutera took several bad angles and was beat. He reminds me of Mark "I get run over" Simoneau for the Saints.
Cutrera is bad. That will be a problem next season if we can't find a replacement for him unless he can drastically improve next year. I just don't see the talent there.
I understand he comes in on nickel packages. Why don't we go with Chad Jones on nickel instead? The man is a beast, can blitz, can cover and can hit. McCray offers none of the above. A liability in the backfield sticking out like a sore thumb is what he is.
Our defense has been terrible on 3rd down this year we can not get off the field. If you look at a lot of the third down conversions and/or big plays against the defense, McCray was most likely on the coverage. Another reason we have been so bad on third down defense is we do not force the issue we rush four and get little to no pressure. I can understand this philosphy going into the season because our D-line was supposed to be special. However after watching 6 straight games of the same with the front four generating pressure on their own, I would have hoped to see more blitzing or at least stunting of the d-line. Our LBs and safeties are so terrible in coverage that you might as well send them on a blitz because I am pretty sure I could get open against them or at least get a pass interference call. The defense has been the most disappointing aspect of the team this year. You score 28 points in a game you should win.
this is one of the most frustrating aspects to this year. it seems we are either unable or unwilling to make adjustments as the game unfolds. don't have a reasonable answer as to why.
McCray shouldnt be in there. He is very good at blitzing but coverage isnt his strength. Yet, he is always in there, in coverage. Again, thats a lack of coaching on Pelini and Miles. As mentioned C Jones would be a much better fit. Ive said it before, I dont feel Cutera has the speed to be an every down SEC LB. I personally feel that Riley should have started. With his size and athleticism C Jones could even be used as a tweener, LB/S. The coaching needs to step up big time in the next two games. LSU made Dick look like an All American QB and allowed Ole Miss to run all over them.
to me, McCray is more of a safety. he's clearly not as good as the other safeties but a better cover guy than Jai Eugene. i think he steps in for Steltz and is fine... i think the reality is that we aren't as deep on D as we thought we were. Chad Jones is a future stud but the drop off is huge after all the DB starters...
