this is the best summation I've read thus far. Unfortunately, after jennings display in the bowl game, my gut feeling was that he wasnt the right guy. Guys were wide ass open all game vs a slow/mediocre big10 team. Most were very short/medium passes and most werent close. luckily, hill was playing for a contract and bailed us out. I think jennings was 7 for 20 or some shit and had less than 100 yards while having all day to throw. It didnt bode well for future sec success. And you cant usually teach accuracy. Vs Miss St, the coaches did nothing to help him however. You cant compete in the sec consistently trying to hide your qb. Your qb has to make plays. So let him. We are so limited in formations/plays/utilization of talent it makes us that much easier to defend. We always seem to depend on our qb after the fact. When losing. We coach backwards most of the time. this has been the script for so long now, it should surprise no one. but its still frustrating as hell.
"Coach backwards" - that's a great way to put it. I remember that Russell was never really allowed to do his thing until late in the game, when we were fighting for our lives. Instead of building up a big lead and protecting it, we'd swallow the football for 3 qtrs then turn him loose. Same thing happened in '10. JJ would suck the whole game and Lee would have to bail him out. Miles seems to want to do the bare minimum until his ass is on the line. Seems like the that approach might be catching up with him.
Like I said a few years ago, it seems sometimes that LSU is a destination where coaches go to collect a big check and cruise to retirement.
I gave AJ a pass for the bowl game because he was basically running the offense designed for Mett and he tried to play like Mett instead of being coached to use his own skills. But now after seeing him for 4 games he is never going to be much more than barely adequate.
Ive been pointing this out for a long time. Its just hard to see when you win 79% of the time. Like the wisconsin game. That game was a loss in my mind but was glad the other coach outdumbed us. Yet, it did show our weaknesses. If your DTs cant stop the run, everything else for the offense is easy. We were getting mauled up front and it continued vs Miss St. We should have seen this and adapted to a more spread offense instead of padding rushing yards vs patsies. Though this is how we coach. The 2011 BCSCG is forever the blueprint until we are out of contention.
Yeah, State really picked-up where Wiscy left off. They even tried to blow the game in the 4th, too. I was forgiving of Jennings after the bowl because Iowa had a good defense and because of his heroics in the Arky game, but he's continued those tendencies since that time. I think he'd be much better off out of the shotgun.
we can see his limitations. Les probably not but plenty of qualified guys on his staff do, namely cameron. So you adapt to his skills, not hang him out to dry like we did mettenberger. Not us, we play against his strengths and try to hide him in a pro set with obvious run/pass formations to boot. Its so bad everywhere it can only get better.
Actually Iowa's defense sucked, sucks, and isn't usually anything special. It only looked that way because our offense sucks. Minus 2011, we haven't had a decent offense since '07.
