Sucks for him. That team is a god damn grease fire. Oakland will trade for Seahawks QB Matt Flynn, as @JayGlazer reported. Deal will be for two picks - one this year + a conditional pick in 14
Per Sports Illustrated: This trade should lead to the completion of another anticipated move: Oakland’s trade of Carson Palmer to the Cardinals. Per Yahoo! Sports: Source: Cards closing in on deal for Carson Palmer Carson Palmer (1st R pick in 2003) was the leading passer for the Raiders each of the last two seasons (4,018 yds and 2,753 yds), Jason Campbell (1st R pick out of Auburn in 2005) the season before that (2,387 yds), and JaMarcus Russell (1st R pick in 2007) the two seasons before that (2,423 yds and 1,287 yds)
Once Carson Palmer is gone, it looks like Flynn's competion at QB will be 23-year-old former 5-star recruit Terrelle Pryor From a reporter that covers the Raiders: There was very little chance that Pryor would have been able to unseat Carson Palmer as the starter for the Raiders in 2013. But now that it appears Palmer will not be with the team, Pryor is suddenly right in the mix, if not the favorite to win the job. ... Many in the Raider Nation fan base would like to see Pryor as the next starting QB and the acquisition of Matt Flynn may be the move to push him into that position. ... This off season, Pryor has been hard at work trying to improve his game, even going so far as to hire three QB coaches on his own dime in order to try and raise the level of his play. For a fan base used to guys like JaMarcus Russell and Rolando McClain who refused to put any effort in, this is a refreshing change.
ESPN.com March 8, 2013 Terrelle Pryor trying to win over team ... "Right now I'm trying to win over my coaches, win over my teammates and everybody in the facility and let them know that I wanna be a leader, a great leader, and I'm there for the long haul, and I wanna win just as bad as everybody else. And that's what I want to prove to everybody before I really get into talks of starting and stuff like that," he told the NBC Sports Network on Wednesday. Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie has said that Pryor would get a chance to compete for the starting job with Carson Palmer, who sources told ESPN will be asked to restructure his contract. The Raiders are scheduled to pay the 33-year-old Palmer $13 million this season. When asked whether he was a better quarterback than Palmer, Pryor, who will turn 24 in June, showed respect to the veteran. "I don't really wanna give comparisons or anything like that because Carson does a great job of what he does, and I can also play, too, and do some things well, too," Pryor said in the interview. "So I can't down talk him because he's a great quarterback to me, and I just wanna stay on my side of seeing what I have to do to get better every single day, and that's where I'm at right now." He said he has hired three quarterback coaches -- Craig Austin, George Whitfield and Steve Clarkson -- specifically to help him improve his (game) .... Pryor got... the chance to start in the final game (last season) at San Diego with Palmer sidelined by cracked ribs and a bruised lung. Pryor went 13-for-28 for 150 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 24-2 loss to the Chargers. He also ran for 49 yards and a score and looked more than capable of running the offense. New Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson said last month it will be important to see what Pryor can do for Oakland during offseason workouts and minicamps to get a better sense of what the team has at quarterback.
When asked about the trade on twitter, this is how Pryor responded: @TerrellePryor what's your take on this trade talk TP. Terrelle Pryor @TerrellePryor I LOVE to COMPETE ! Whatever makes us better ! Stay patient!
Michael Trevino @Michael_Trevino 2h Matt Flynn or Terrelle Pryor? Who's it gonna be Raiders... Responses: Val~air~ee @val_air_ee 1h I seriously think they should give Pryor a chance. NFL.com roundtable debate on Flynm v Pryor Jeff Darlington NFL.com there's little way of knowing... we simply just don't know Bucky Brooks NFL.com Flynn could become another disappointing starter for a team in desperate need of a franchise quarterback. Charley Casserly NFL.com This move is a bridge to the next QB. It also tells you that the Raiders are not sold on Terrelle Pryor . Adam Rank NFL.com This is a genius move for the Raiders and their new starting quarterback for 2013: Terrelle Pryor . Yes, the Raiders just traded for Matt Flynn . So did the Seahawks last year. And look what it did for Russell Wilson. The NFL is a copycat league, so the Raiders are just taking a page from the Seahawks' playbook and have acquired Flynn to motivate their own read-option quarterback. The Raiders have made some questionable personnel moves in the past decade, but this is one I sincerely endorse. Gregg Rosenthal NFL.com Flynn is just a guy... who will compete for snaps with Terrelle Pryor Jason Smith NFL.com Playing Pryor, and not having him battle Flynn, is the Raiders' best strategy I don't like this move for Oakland. You have to find out if Terrelle Pryor can play quarterback, and that won't happen unless you see him in games that matter. Putting Pryor in a quarterback derby with Flynn limits Pryor's reps and risks him being outshined by Flynn. ... Bringing in Matt Flynn creates a mess. When you have a quarterback who needs game action, and could be a superstar, bringing in competition can postpone or ruin that possibility. Pryor needs 16 games in 2013 to see what he is. Don't mess that up.
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, who was the Packers' director of football operations before he was hired as the Raiders' general manager last year... "I've known Matt Flynn since 2007 and scouted him before and after he entered the NFL," Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a statement on the team's website. "Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback. He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential. We're going to let him compete and battle, and see what happens."
