When DEMOCRAT Byrd was 24-years-old, he joined the Klan because he wasworried that during World War II, he might have to fight alongside “race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.” Bryd wrote those words in 1944 to Sen. Theodore Bilbo, a staunch DEMOCRAT segregationist. It gets worse Of all the outlets that eulogized Byrd, only the Hill bothered to mention that a “young” Byrd not only joined the KKK, but also led his local chapter. No single obituary of DEMOCRAT Byrd mentioned his 2001 use of the term “white nigger,” an early 20th-century anachronism that DEMOCRAT Byrd employed not once, but twice during an interview with Tony Snow. There's more ABC News noted that “despite his successful political track record, the Senate’s senior Democrat was no stranger to controversy and was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan,” as if calling for the extermination of dark-skinned peoples (as well as Jews, Catholics, and gays) was no more stirring a gaffe than Gary Hart’s monkey business.

Robert Byrd renounced the KKK and apologized for his participation a long time ago. Not many West Virginians of either party take your bullshit seriously because they know he redeemed himself in deeds, many times over. Even the NAACP very publicly mourned his death.
And yet the ancestors of those that fought in the civil war have apologized many times over in word and deed...building schools and hospitals, providing clean water and safe streets and you won't extend them the same grace you do an avowed racist?
