He should have just gone up to the line and done it. Nobody would have questioned his decision to do so.
In retrospect, he obviously should have clocked it and had 2 chances at the end zone. The other school of thought is that they've got Bama on the ropes, so take the shot. Clocking it gives Bama D a chance to regroup. It was obviously the wrong call.
Problem with that line of thinking is: your offense is also disorganized and needs to regroup. D has the advantage of being on a condensed field, so they have far less ground to cover. I think the negatives outweigh the positives in that situation of trying to run a quick play. Easy to say in hindsight, but I'm sure Richt will have his QB spike the ball and run more plays if a situation anywhere near that comes up again. Too bad the SEC and NCG were both on the line, ouch!
Exactly right. If Bama would have been disorganized, it would have been evident immediately. They weren't and it showed, should have spiked it so they could huddle up to call a play based on the defensive look Bama showed.
