you know its bad when you picking next years top 5 before this years even over...i mean, you dont know whose going pro, spring and fall camp injuries, coaching changes, signing class/incoming freshmen, etc. good gawd, i think May had a premature moment.
I worry about not being the underdog as much as the next person, but with our success in the last few years I understand folks picking us on top. If fact, just looking at this years schedules for the two teams would probably make me put OSU as underdog. Not that it really matters once the game starts, but on this year’s schedules Ohio State played 2 teams (# 13 Illinois & # 18 Wisconsin) in the final 25 BCS poll. Ohio State finished the season 1-1 against those teams. LSU played 4 teams (#3 VT, #12 Florida, #16 Tennessee & #23 Auburn) in the final 25 BCS poll. LSU finished 4-0 against those teams.
1. ToSU has a very good team and are very capable of beating us. 2. If I bet on the game, I'm not going to get my advice from Mark May. 3. LSU has a very good team and is very capable of winning. 4. The Big 10 is a very physical conference and a very good conference. Not sure how much (if at all) the SEC is better than the Big 10. 5. Overall, I think, can someone find out, that there are more teams in the SEC that have actually won a NC than the Big 10. Not counting the number of NCs, but in the SEC: UGA, Bama, Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, Florida, Tenn, and Ole Miss. In the Big 10: UM, ToSU, Penn State and ?? have won NCs. All of these teams have alot of pride, even when they aren't playing as great as they once did. To me this is the big difference between the conferences. Speed is also an issue, but it is slightly overated. 6. I hope that Tressel plays that bs soft zone against us that he used against Florida. I could not believe that they never adjusted. UF wasnt that much faster, but they played a hell of a lot faster. My issue with with tOSU is that they may be fast, but they haven't played a lot of teams that play fast. When they do, they haven't adjusted. 7. Les Miles taught Meyer a lesson when they played three years ago. LSU crushed them on the field, the score was not as lopsided as the game. He adapted and won the NC. If Tressel does not adapt, he will get beat again. If he does, we have a hell of a game on our hands.
The almighty Ohio State is 0-8 against SEC teams in its last 8 games played. I know you wanted to make a solid point, but come on let's deal with reality.
Excellent post 86. Agreed with this... UM, PSU are playing way below their ability. I've always felt there is a better depth of top-20 teams in the SEC, but not always more top-7 squads. It was beyond bizarre, I've seen OSU be out-executed, but never have I seen such complete lack of adjustments, on both sides of the ball. That's typically been Tressel's strong suit. Stubborn obsession with the pass, playing into UF's undersized fast front 7... ignoring a successful running game. And like you said, the exact opposite formula needed vs Leak, as evidenced all year. There were some limited players in OSU's secondary that they were protecting, but obviously it wasn't doing a very good job. Miles will do backflips if Gholston is dropped into coverage all game again You mock his quality post with this? Tell me, how does the 00 trainwreck of a squad have any bearing on this matchup, before JT even arrived? Or the 7-5 squad during his first season (obviously rebuilding)? I won't even get into the 5 games before that. If you guys were facing Pete Carroll and his great success, would you really reference games from his first year and past coaching regimes as 'reality' for an upcoming matchup? I realize you guys have to back your conference, but if there was a team epitomizing an unbeatable force, 'southern speed' and nfl talent, it was Miami 02, not UF 06. Against the former they came in hungry and shut up everyone. The next time they came in spoiled and got smacked around. Who knows how this game will play out, but acting like there is only one stereotype to bring up is pretty naive. Who knows what will happen. IMO, it's a lazy, kneejerk reaction to simply pull the SEC or 0-8 card. The funny thing is Florida or OU would get far more respect nationally, but it was not long ago they were the laughing stock of a "NC" type matchup. Oklahoma was exposed two years in a row, yet that's not as fun of a punching bag... so suddenly those games are no longer held against them. I dunno.
And yet, Tressel is a much better coach than Miles...I haven't seen Miles have a complete lack of adjustments game, or have his team be out-executed the way that your team was last year. You guys Like to say that the SEC speed advantage is a myth...It is also a myth that Miles is not a good coach.
Alamo Bowl 04 comes to mind. RB Morency was a stud (started for Pack last 2 yrs), yet he hung his hat on a young inconsistent QB who took a pounding. I believe Morency got 8 carries all day. Actually quite similar to the beef with Tressel's gameplan. edit: 04 Alamo Box Score The defense wasn't that great, but they were outmatched, and I think Miles is more of an offensive mind, right? Somewhat similar to Tressel, it's his responsibility as the head honcho... but JT is the OC, not the DC. I think those debates often center around whether he's a 'great coach'... I think he has more to achieve (like in 4 weeks) to reach that pedestal. Until then, his river gambler style leaves some room for doubt. It's interesting how bias comes into play... UM fans desperately crave new life & non-predictability so they love Miles, while OSU fans have quite the opposite opinion likely due to their revered coach's conservative nature. (at least in smaller games)
