This will immediately create instant controversy for all conference championship games. Truth was the west easily had the three best teams. Oh, I forgot the SECCG is ridicules too.
Matching up the quote.."best most deserving teams for that particular bowl" and allowing that school to earn some money...the more prestiges the bowl...the more money earned. Mark Cuban is a Basketball affecianado....not football.
The west easily had the best 4 teams in my opinion. South Carolina beat you guys and represented the East in Atlanta, but do I believe that Alabama isn't a better team than USC? uh hell no. USC didn't have to play LSU. Alabama had to play USC, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, and Mississippi State, not in that order, that has to be the toughest if not top 5 toughest schedule in the nation. LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, and Mississippi State need to win their bowl games. This really needs to happen so the world can have no doubt that the best football is played in the SEC West.
your right Lasalle......but here's what the Ncaa fears the most....having 3 sec teams get in a playoff...and having an all sec final game.
I think an 8-team playoff would be a good hybrid - here's how I'd structure it: 1) Get an unbiased ranking system in place that only takes into account the current season games/outcomes. 2) Top 4 ranked conference champions a spot. 3) Any undefeated teams not in due to #2 get in (this rule is unlikely to actually be needed, but I hate the idea of players busting their butts all season, winning all of their games, and still being prevented from getting a shot at a national championship.) 4) All remaining spots would be filled by the highest ranked teams not yet in the playoffs. 5) The playoffs would be seeded based on the rankings, top 4 teams get a home game for the first round. 6) Semi-final round would be on/near New Year's Day, at BCS bowls (bowls bid for the right to host). 7) Championship game held about a week after New Year's, at a different BCS bowl location.
So if South Carolina upset the barn they're in? Got to be a sure way to at least get the top BCS poll teams in. The way the CCG is structured it only promises us that the regular season may not matter as much.
What really needs to happen is to keep the conferences, get rid of the conference championship game. Play a round robin in your conference, and have the team that finishes first advance. then you can determine wild cards based on some sort of voting. You would need a governing body that votes the wildcards in, and they would have to be completely transparent, which means they would have to make their vote public and explain why they voted that way. You can still have conference winners, but it will be determined by record only. You have to have an impartial voting system though that is comprised of 2 things, and 2 things only. Record, and Strength of Schedule. They would also need to have a rating scale per conference, per year and per year only. Tradition means jack sh!t. That way, if you are UConn, you win your conference, and you play in a conference that has a 2 or 3 rating out of 10, and you finish with more 3 or more conference losses, your conference does not get in.
