Before the famous 1966 UTEP upset of Kentucky with 5 black starters for the Miners, Loyola Chicago won the natty in 1963 with 4 black starters. One of the was Lesle Scott from Baton Rouge.

Loyola New Orleans had a guard back then named Charlie Powell. He was a parade all American guard and was the first black athlete to play for any previously all white college team in Louisiana. I saw him several times at the Loyola field house.

He was from Baton Rouge too.

Saw the Jazz play a few times in the field house. Had that crazy elevated court with giant nets on both sides to keep the players from falling off. By the time I became a Loyola student, the field house had been converted into a rec center. It was fun to think I was playing intramural ball in the same building where Pistol went head to head with West, Monroe and other great guards of the 70's.

Wow. I went to some games there too. I always wondered why they elevated that court...street flooding?

If I remember right, the nets only came there when the pros got there. Didn't the ABA Bucs play there or were they in the municipal auditorium ?

Back in my dad's day, Loyola had a real good boxing team. LSU had one too. I'd like to see that return. I can imagine heavyweight bouts between LSU and Bama or Ole Miss. Before basketball games.

I only saw the Jazz there. The Bucs were a little before my time. I also saw the Jazz play in the auditorium.
