Back in 2004, the Giants were so hell bent on getting Peyton, er, Eli Manning, that they traded their 4th pick in the draft Phillip Rivers, plus a 3rd round pick that same year plus a 1st and 5th round pick in 2005 in order to get him. The Chargers went on to use that first round pick of 2005 to draft Shawne Merriman, arguably the most destructive LB in all of football. Ernie Acorsi, the GM of the Giants, was quoted as saying back in 2004: "We all had the unanimous opinion this was a special quarterback (Manning), and you don't get a chance very many times, for decades, to select someone like him." Rivers has been at the helm for only 10 games. Eli has been trying at it for 2 full seasons longer. Hmmm, looks like Rivers was that QB, not Manning. You dope.
I think it's still too early to tell. Rivers looks good but having LT on his team sure makes things easier for him.
You can say that, but you can also say he has absolutely no wideouts worth mentioning. Eli, not the case. Plaxico is one of the better ones in the league. It's all relative. And this just in, Tiki is pretty darn good.
Look at the offensive schemes. The Giants run a very conservative offense. Almost as if they tell Manning to not lose the game instead of go win it. The Giants are great at the skills positions but Coughlin has NO idea how to use them.
That's only part of the story. Eli flat refused to go to the Chargers, which opened the door for a trade to happen. The Chargers then just jammed the Giants in a mini-Herschel Walker deal. They're both fine QBs, and have a lot of great years ahead of them. I saw Rivers on PTI a couple of weeks ago, and was blown away by how well he handled himself. VERY well spoken and likeable. I guess that should be expected after starting for 4 years in college, and being in his third pro year. Nevertheless, sometimes you never know.
Coughlin sucks. Have no idea why the Giants went in that direction after already dealing with mediocrity with Fossil-feul.
Well, not for nothin', but Coughlin had gotten the Jags to a conference championship or two, and Fassel did get the Gints to the Super Bowl. Neither are Belichick, but they ain't exactly chopped liver either (though Fassel's offense at Baltimore was the onions to a bad chopped liver dinner.)
