If you are correct with your last sentence ("These situations are few and far between when a coach comes in and completely changes the system."), then why do you think we'd have "kids jumping around all the time"? And this guy may not lose any eligibility, but others can and do if they've already burned up their redshirt.
the ncaa transfer rool is a crock. but so is the ncaa. however, this happens at every place where there is a coaching change. it is horrible that because mallet is such a good prospect that his situation seems worse/ gets more airtime. he should get no more sympathy/consideration than any other player.
I don't think he should be able to get a waiver. That is "just life." Think of all of the times that Matt Flynn surely wondered whether or not he'd ever get his chance @ LSU. How did he feel when RP signed with us? These things happen, but I don't think he should get special treatment. Besides, he must've been living under a rock if he actually thought that Lloyd Carr would be around for his entire career @ Michigan. Everyone knew Carr was on the way out. Perhaps he should've considered that the promises that Carr was making were hollow.
Maybe Mustain could get back the year he lost. Nuttjob told him he would throw the ball around, yet through no fault of his own, Arky ran the ball with their 2 stud RBs instead.
You kind of argued against yourself there. Then a kid being able to tranfer without sitting out a year would be few and far between also.
I would hardly say he was lied to. "The program" is whatever the current coach makes it to be. When Carr was "the program", Mallet played, as promised. Now RR is "the program," and he's been quite up front in telling Mallet there's no role for him. It sucks for RM, that's for sure, and I'm all for some kind of rule that gives kids in his position some satisfaction. Won't happen in time for RM, but life isn't always fair.
It may be moot in this player's case, but under your theory anyone who came to Michigan when Carr was HC, or LSU when Saban was HC, or any other school who changes coaches should be able to transfer with no problems because the new coach has a different system theory? What happens if the HC stays but decides to take the offense in a different direction - introduce the spread say like a Jimbo leaves and is replaced by a Crowton? I don't buy it and certainly don't think the NCAA should make an exception.
Not at all. The point is that this doesn't happen very often so there's no sense in trying to fix it. If we start down this path, then it will get to a point where they'll give a little more and a little more and then we have kids jumping all over.
