I have to disagree. Hamilton was a steal. He could play the role that Mike Bell played. He averages 3.9 yards a carry, and that is remarkable considering he got limited carries in mostly short yardage situations. Theo one game when PT and Bell were out Hamilton had a 5.4 yard average. He had potential to be a very good back. There are not 100 of those around. The Saints are very fortunate to have found a suitable replacement in Chris Ivory.
I would have to agree with CS on this one. Hamilton appeared to be a decent back, but nothing special. I do think we may miss him more as a special teamer. That's more my worry at this point. Not everybody can be that great special teamer. He was certainly that.
Well I may view may be skewed cause this dude is one of my top five all time favorite Saints. But he was certainly more than a decent back. He was a guy who had done enough in the eyes of Coach Payton to garner a significantly increased role.
I went to a lot of the practices in 08, and he really impressed me. The fact that he is well spoken also helps. I like success stories and he was one. Oft injured in college. Undrafted. Gets on the practice squad and then active roster as a rookie. Increases role in 2nd year. Special teams ace. Steps up when called upon. Plugged to be the 3rd down back as a 3rd year man. He is a winner. My top five probably goes: Steve Gleason Breesus Freddie Mac Sam Mills Lynell Hamilton
Very interesting list. It does speak to the type player you like, which is the one willing to put in the hard work to be the best they can be. That's what that list embodies.
For the record, whoever scouts running backs for the Saints under Payton has done a bang up job of finding guys to fill roles. PT, Lynell Hamilton, PJ Hill, Jason Craft are all undrafted guys that made the team. It looks like they found another gem in Chris Ivory.
Torn ACL. Out for the season. Feel bad for the young man. Will be tough for him to get back and be a factor in the NFL at this point.
