You know, I always find it funny when fans of a particular team bash a coach and demand loyalty from the coach, but don't offer loyalty to the coach. That's true of both of us. I've learned over the years that coaches are businessmen and nothing more. Fans are a mob and nothing more. Each side wants the most it can get from the relationship. The coach wants money and power and the fans want wins. Both will trade each other for even a slight increase in either wins or money. That's the business.
Fans showed Satan tons of loyalty until he showed he had none. Add to that the fact that he returns two years later to our SEC West rival and immediately goes after every recruit on LSU's recruiting board and you should see clearly that he has earned no loyalty from LSU fans.
No way would I trade Miles for Saban. In fact, I am beginning to think that we actually made an upgrade. You bammers are fooling yourselves by thinking that he is going to wave a magic wand over your once-proud program and get instant results.
When you pay your coach 32 million, I am sure you can find about 30,000 for a recruit. Congrats on the purchase!:thumb: Luther Davis will be in for a rude awakening in 2008 in Death Valley. Hopefully he doesn't get Bama in trouble again for paying players.:dis:
If you remove 2003 satan was not a great coach during his LSU tenure either. We lucked up on one SECC and we had to have EVERYTHING fall into place at the last minute to jump USC for the MNC. Miles walked into a complete clusterf**k situation after the hurricanes and coached a ragged worn out team to the SECC game in his first year. And his bowl games do not need any explanation.
This is a recruiting forum. Do not derail recruiting threads with flaming posts about our coach or you will disappear, as if by magic. This is your only warning.
Saban is a great coach. All things considered, I wouldn't trade him for Miles now, but he is still a great coach. Saban turned things around at LSU - I don't see how it is even debatable. I don't expect him to do the same at Bama, but it wouldn't surprise me. I appreciate everything Saban did for our program - I can't blame him for trying out the NFL (though I thought it was a mistake, and it was). It sucks that he had to become coach of another team in the SEC west, but Bama was willing to pay alot of money. He has made the SEC even better than it was by returning and the west will probably be hell. LSU will always want that game as much as Auburn wants the Iron Bowl now, at least until Saban leaves. There is less room for error now for Miles, but I think Miles is up to the challenge. He is in the right place at the right time, continues to hire great assistant coaches, and keeps getting great recruits to play for the Tigers. I expect Saban will struggle more than Miles. In any case, LSU is probably in the best position it's been in throughout its entire history. It is great to be a tiger. I welcome the competition Bammers (though not the weak flaming that's been going on). Looking forward to the game. It will be sad for a second to see Saban on the other side of the field. But that sadness will quickly be replaced by an intense yearning to whip some Crimson Tide tail.
Here's why it worked for him...LSU had enough talent back when of all coaches (Gerry DiNardo) was calling the shots. It took Saban, and his staff...to finally put it together. And at the time we played OU for the NC. Up to that point, we didnt know if we were going to be ranked high enough to be in the BCS title Game. We were, we played at home, and we won. Ever since that night, LSU has been feared as a tough talent rich team. Players want to be here, Networks want to carry our games more. It's a wonderful thing, But it could have happened earlier than it did. Now you take over a Alabama team, with so many losing season. And a lot of bridges you've burned in LA and other states. You will be hard pressed to turn it around like he did at LSU. We will see exactly what happens. But my gut feeling, is he blew his chance, at a Dynasty...when he left LSU at the alter.
satan had one great season, and a very good one and a few good ones. But if you average Miles two final season rankings (6 +3 = 9) and average those two finishes, it comes to 4.5. I don't think satan ever did that. After a very good year, he took a dip. Miles has been more consistently good than satan. Who would I take? Based on satan's ways, particularly in the off season, I'll stick with Miles. Miles is a great recruiter in his own right. If you can get em to go to Stillwater OK, and beat OU, you can recruit.
